The game does not start

I need help with a large problem i am currently having with dwarf fortress. when i attempt to launch the game it does not launch at all, it also freezes computer up to the point where i have to turn it off. I am not perfectly sure what is the cause of the problem, i got the installation from the official website. I am very new to dwarf fortress btw

My version of the game is for windows xp ). i have a windows based computer with eide hardrive and amd processor. I downloaded the latest version of dwarf fortress that is available on the main site.

sounds like a corrupted save file.  Delete the files in the data\save folder, also, run ckdsk next time you have a couple of hours to clean up bad sectors on your hardrive (turning the computer off while its frozen can and will screw up your data.

And if that doesn't work, remove the entire df folder (get rid of it permanently) and do a fresh install with a new download.  The latest version is 0.28.181.39e.

Well, the thing is that the hardrdive is very new, you can say that i just bought it.

I've heard reports of harddrives, mostly Western Digital, dying really quickly. Sometimes a few hours after the first use. Chances are this is just a corrupted download/save though. Not a real harddrive issue. I've yet to run into a bad drive myself and I use Western Digital exclusively.

Any other details you can give? Do any other programs do this? Are you trying to start a new fortress? Are you using a world you downloaded/used before? Any other details you can give us on your system's capabilities?

okay. It literally was my first launch in dwarf fortress. No other program did this to me ever. Exept a really bad worm i once got. But this time its not a virus. Every other program is running just fine. But when i attempt to launch DF it freezes up the whole system. And when i try to get the task manager or anything else to stop it it makes a system short beep and doesn't even allow me to move the mouse after. And the download i have made seems complete and ready to go.

more detailed specs: dual core amd 2.4 ghz possessor, geforce 8600 gt, 2 gigs of ram, 320 gig professor. Basically i have a modified gateway gt5220

Only possibility that comes to my mind is something is defective and Dwarf Fortress is just demanding enough to flesh it out. Perhaps a memory error. Or it could just be a compatibility issue. Try turning off as many things as you can and see what happens.

You might want to grab and run memtest just in case and to eliminate that from the list of possible issues.

i'd recommend doing a stress test for your processor (doublemark works well). If this does't work, try replacing your ram/putting your hard drive as a slave drive in another computer. Hope it works :D
