Possible bug
« on: May 20, 2008, 03:48:00 pm »

I have about 40 dwarves with legendary in all the social skills. My fortress isn't that old (10 years) so I don't think any of them got it naturally. Also, I even have a legendary child with legendary in all the social skills.

Oh, and also I've had something like 30 marriages take place. Although that could be a byproduct of the social skills?

10 years is a decent fort.  My fort ussually has legendary social dwarves by year 3.

Odd, guess my other forts weren't very sociable then. Either way, how's the cild with all social skills maxed explained?

When a dwarf is sitting around doing nothing, and other dwarves are nearby, he is actually socializing with them (very quietly). This might happen when he's on break, eating, drinking, but I'm really not sure. I don't think so, because I've had very busy forts where I micromanaged and had no idlers, and many had no social skills.

As far as I know, marriages happen when dwarves really like each other. Which requires socialization. Which, probably, requires idling near other dwarves.

As for the kid, I routinely get kids that are legendary planters because they harvest crops. Kids mostly just sit around making old folks angry (Git off mah lawn!) so they tend to be effectively idle at all times.

I have had some kids work as masons building walls and such. But not every time.

Also, it depends on what legendary skill it is. Your accountant will guaranteed be legendary, and your starting seven will probably also be legendary. Any miners you've used for a while, too. And definitely any engravers will become legendary after a few years.

Socials skills will eventually be integrated into the "No attribute gained from" group of skills, eventually.

As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of those dwarves that suffer your neglect.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

Well that explains it probably. I would also presume that the rate at which dwarves gain the skills is influenced by how sociably adept the dwarves they are socializing with. I now have 80+ legendary social dwarves (total population is 152, including 41 children), at least 50 marriages also.

About half of my dwarves are just sitting around while the other half is building my epic river-city (I'll upload it to DFMA when I am done).

Maybe this is the curse of the young bride who fell to her death 7 z-levels and then gave birth just before dying from her injuries. The kid survived to adulthood I believe.

Another wierd thing I haven't done anything to encourge sociality except for designating a meeting area far away from the construction area. Until recently I didn't even have a well, and I still don't have any chairs/thrones. Even my barracks is tiny, 14 bed in a 5x5 room.

I can only confirm that exploit. Having many dwarfs meet at a small location, say a 1x1 meeting area, idling, they will gain those social skills incredibly fast. It seems almost that the more dwarfs are at such a meeting, the faster it goes for everyone of them... having all legendary and with best skills after the first year, also the childs, yes, is quite boring.

This is why I want social skills to NOT GIVE attributes.

I can only second that. But having social skills up legendary would still make them legendary dwarfs (impacts dwarven economy) and those skills would also have an effect an trading, maybe? So that effect should be handled, somewhat.
