Unskilled Dwarves Take FOREVER to Heal
« on: July 24, 2008, 12:40:49 am »

I was playing my turn in a succession game, and noticed that the dwarf I had picked as my "avatar" had a husband with a broken leg.  Just a yellow wound.  In any case, I played through my year, and looked back in on the husband.  His leg was still broken, after a full year of bedrest, plus however long he had been in bed already.  I know that broken legs take a while to heal, but over a year seems excessive for only a yellow wound.

The husband was a raw recruit, with no skills in particular.

Skills have no say in how fast a wound heals. And healing has always taken forever, even for the most minor of wounds.

What about toughness, which can come from skills?

Toughness is resistance to pain and the character's ability to keep from falling unconscious and keeps them from getting thirsty/hungry/tired longer.

No proof about faster healing, which I haven't seen any actual improvements in healing time with a superdwarvenly tough dwarf.

Yellow/red wounds have a chance to heal on season change. I think toughness does improve the odds, but its still up to chance. I've had dorfs heal very rapidly from multiple red wounds, or a single yellow wounded dorf languishing for years.

I'd just chalk this up to the vagaries of the injury. Some injuries, despite looking horrendous, heal rapidly. Other seemingly minor injuries can take ages to heal.

He needs to train up his healing skill. :P HP Regen + 10! Get the potions!

No, but seriously... I have a bedridden dwarf... He's been lazing about whining for quite a while, now. :P

I once had a mason fall down during a construction accident and he got yellow wounds to his arms, legs and most of his inner organs.

He blinked on the ground for a few turns and managed to put himself together and got back to work.  :o

I've had dwarves keep working with wounds as well.

I had a dwarf get shot by a fire imp and get a yellow arm, but even after that I activated him and he and the other guy I activated killed 4 imps and a fire man (the entire vent was after him, haha) and then he continued about his work after I deactivated him. The wound was healed shortly afterward (only about 5 days) on the season change, so I guess it wasn't a bad break :)

Did either of you two have any beds?

Wait, you're telling me the entire injury system, and the annoyances thereof, hinges entirely on whether the dwarves CAN laze about in bed?

Well, if YOU had a crazed, evil, omnipotent overlord would YOU be caught laying around on the ground while theres work to be done (barring unconciousness, death, cannibal elves etc.)?

Whereas, if you had a bed you could lie in and say you were 'resting' would you do so?

Dumb question, but was your dwarf felled by an archer?
I had a soldier wait for years before I thought to look through his inventory screen and pick out the arrow embedded in his leg.

Yes. Without beds dorfs who are merely walking wounded instead of outright crippled with horrific injuries will continue to walk around, feeds themselves, and even do work.
