Tree Cap Irrigation

Question. After killing many, many dwarves trying to control the ocean going into a large underground chamber I dug out (partially due to it freezing over as it enters without filling up the chamber).....

Is it possible to just dig a freaking huge chamber, and order dwarves (through some trick of the pond zoning) to use buckets to fling water into it? All I want is damp soil so tree-caps will grow.

You need an underground pool or river in order for tower caps to grow.

I read on these forums that all I need is muddy ground, and to wait 3 years.

You need either an underground river or lake. Once you've discovered that, tree caps will begin to grow on muddy tiles on the map, but not before you've discovered it.

Are there any good ways to find underground rivers?  I've been wanting to make a 100% underground  fort and this would be perfect

Yes, seeing as in this version you can toggle if underground rivers and the like are shown on the embark screen...

You've been able to toggle weather for quite a few versions now. The rest of your sentence makes little sense.
