If it's as beautiful as you say, lumin, I'd assume the Company is funding them :P

Then again, it seems so good ... I ... I want to sign up ...

I'd still love to take part in an online game of any sort.  If I had the option, I'd suggest GURPS.  It came recommended to me by Howard Tayler, and it is crunch and mutability at it's finest.  Just some d6's and point-based check-numbers.  It can also keep track of limb damage, necessary to any recreation of DF.

I was going to suggest this, actually. It also has a free version, with the basic rules, somewhere on this internet thing. I may try to find it.

EDIT: Ah, here it is. I found it through your link. Very handy.
EDIT2: Well, apparently it requires some sort of registration... I have a copy floating around on a hardrive somewhere here. If anyone's interested, I'll email them a copy so they can host it somewhere. I don't feel like bothering to set up a geocities account. Yes, I'm that lazy.

I was kinda disappointed by the GURPS lite rules. At that point I'd just throw something of my own together.

Heck, use Car Wars rules minus all the vehicular movement stuff. 2d6 system, baby!

For the people that are brand-new to pencil and paper RPG's, Risus is great. It is very simple, characters take only minutes to make, and the game is written to be ridiculous and funny. All you need is a pencil, paper, and a six sided die. Best of all, the basic manual is free for download.

Fudge(TM) for the Win!
Totally free, uses some sort of funky dice, and every character can have a completely different set of stats / skills :)
Better than GURPS Lite ;)

GURPS is definitely a lot better for modeling DF than D&D is. It's a bit more simulation, a little less game - More chance of crippling wounds and horrible death, less magic, one-use-per-day special moves, and obscene power creep. That said, the full GURPS rules, though more appropriate for DF, can get really complicated - I'd imagine way too slow for a play-by-post, though I've never tried to run one myself. Also, expensive book.

I was pretty sure he was talking about setting up a regularly scheduled game over a gaming client. So it's just like tabletop except you miss out on the fun of rolling dice, being around your friends, and it's a little slower. On the other hand, figurines, dice, and books are free and you don't need to waste time mapping on graph paper.

Did he want this to be DF based?

Getting really drunk and having a long post war of things that could be the meaning behind the acronym "GP" don't count.

Different rules encourage different play styles. All these suggestions to use different systems will result in a game experience that is not really D&D unless you try pretty hard to make it that.

So what is it about D&D that you wanted to play?
