How do I jump off cliffs?

I am currently playing adventure mode for the second time (after an ill-fated attempt in which my dwarf committed suicide through falling) and have had quite a successful run, sneaking about in the night and gouging peoples' eyes out before strangling them. However, for some reason, I find myself unable to move onto open spaces by pressing alt-(arrowkey). Have the commands for this action changed, or has it been eliminated completely now that cliffs are smoothed?

I've been using alt+cursor without any trouble in the latest version. You get a menu and all. Maybe there's something wrong with your keyboard config?

The magma pipe is only intriguing because the z level windows don't pop up for it. There just is nothing there (supposedly). Then you jump in and there is definitely magma engulfing your entire body as it is turned to ash.

Well, that's because you can't see through magma. So you can't see the lower z-levels.

No, in fact the message is the "you fall into a deep chasm" one. Kind of disappointing, actually.

I once fell into some magma dripping into chasm from a fortress I once had; so I leapt in, burning.

All that you could see was this little orange/red/yellow flashing dot disappearing slowly into the depths.
