And as for it being tedious and a total crapshoot...  Have I ever done anything else?   It's not worth doing unless it's time consuming and uncertain, that's my motto.

My unofficial motto, that is.

What is your official motto?

I was actually going to point out the fact it wasn't actually you (Kagus) doing it, but looks like I got beaten to it. It's somewhat irrelevant anyway, considering there are apparently a couple of us just crazy enough to do it at your behest and my original point had something to do with it not being an attractive prospect for most people. Which may still hold true but whatever.

I actually devoted the time I had to fortress mode today, as I finally found a perfect little area for a fort containing every commodity except potable water, and it has skeletal groundhogs to boot. Anyway, I'll be sure to devote some love to a historian adventurer tomorrow. Or later today should time allow.

Cool idea. Why not do this as a joint project? Generate one world for several players to explore and write that worlds history. Create a thread, compare notes and connect dots and loose ends as you unravel legends and history

I'll join into this little historian pact. I do like the idea of a joint effort (I believe you can switch legends so that you have to discover them somewhere as well, I may be wrong).

The joint thing would be nice. As for doing it alone, well... I tried it earlier, and promptly went insane after about the five-hundred-thousandth mention that "The Fairy-Fucking Dune is to the north. Groundhogs frolic around there." (I would drill through 'Surroundings' trying to get events, then move through Capitol and Family trying to find stuff). I got a few hits, but all-in-all a Small world just didn't get me much. I'll probably do a proper write-up later, as I did have some interesting ideas as far as literary stuff goes.

As I said, the joint thing might work out better, but a world with a short history and perhaps a small geographical setting might be the only way to actually get much. I also have an uncanny feeling that if there are two neighboring civs, they only talk about things that happened in their own and ignore the others. I could be wrong on that, though.

I was thinking now with the new version exploring a worlds history might be more interesting

And more fun and worthwhile if people do it together. The historians could start in different regions and freely interpret their history and legends then compare with others. If you like mix a bit of roleplaying like a dwarven historian being biased to dwarven accomplishments etc. One should update a summary to keep overall history coherent. One could act as cartographer and drwa a map or two.  But yeah probably a good idea to keep world small and history short

If we decide to work out some history as a team, I propose that we explore the very standard-sounding World Zero (dramatic music).

World seed, history seed, and name seed were all 0.  Chose "Small" for size.

As we speak, Bekat Kingspoon is exploring what appears to be the result of a Human kingdom having taken over all the world's Elf civs in the Northwest area of the world.

Hi!

I don't think I have the time to actually participate in this challenge, but here are a few of my observations/comments about what has been said in this thread.

1. Legend mode is toggled by an (e)xtended option in the design menu. It seems that it is bugged that if you hide it as important events remain visible even though they are not counted as revealed ???

The current default for the legend mode toggle is that ALL HISTORY IS REVEALED, so if you wish to have a hidden history, you do need to change the extended options, sorry.

2. Bug reports seem to indicate that culling historic persons does affect world creation (a behavior I personally consider buggy, but whatever). Therefore, besides the seeds, the culling state would probably be required.

For this kind of challenge, non-culling seems more interesting.

3. I have not done much playing in Adventure mode but have done a little bit of fortress building. Concerning engravings, I have witnessed that dwarves in fortress mode do engrave historic events, however this makes up only a small part of their repertoire (very often, they simply engrave things, then, they often engrave the insignia of their clan or their civilization, and only occasionally they will do historic events). I once witnessed a fascinating story enfold with two humans and 3 sasquatches spanning a bit more than 100 years ... and I still don't know WHY the dwarves chose these incidents.

I remember people commenting about site engravings here on the forums, so I think it is not unprobable to see such things. However, there has also been musing that site creation time limits the number of available motifs. A lot of settlements are founded in the year 1 when nothing has transpired yet, so this may also hamper the existance of such engravings.

Anyhow, I am planning to have an eye on this thread since the history and such stuff are really interesting, so I am curious about what people will experience.

I've tried a history type project with a small world with events hidden and I've started to produce a bit of a travel guide. I think that a travel guide might be easier to do as a coordinated project and you could loop the history in too.
