This may have been suggested before, though I couldn't find it with a cursory search. What if we could attach a lever to a catapult or ballista and fire it (blindly with no immediate aiming of course) by pulling said lever? Pressure plates and the like would also be fun for this.

We don't have to get too complicated about this, I'm not about to suggest linking siege engines to windmills for faster reloading. I'm just suggesting that after our dwarves load a siege engine, we could pull a lever to fire it off.

I know as is we can just go to a loaded siege engine, tell it to fire at will, and a dwarf will go fire it immediately (so long as we've got our workers properly organized). However, one of the great difficulties in a siege is to stop your dwarves from rushing into the fray to collect fallen gear, and the easiest solution to that is to tell them to stay inside. If you've built outside defensive stockades like I have, which don't count as 'inside', that makes it very hard to get siege engineers to stay out and fire when they need to.

Agreed. Auto-gun traps ftw.

Linking the siege engines to mechanical energy sources would actually work really well, from a dwarven standpoint, I approve of that idea. Especially with the potential to also link the ballasta to levers or pressure plates.

I wholeheartedly support this suggestion.  +1, for whatever that's worth.  Also,

I'm not about to suggest linking siege engines to windmills for faster reloading.

I am.  That is an awesome idea.  We need more uses for power, right?  Okay, so we use excess mechanical power to crank those ballistas back instead of dwarven elbow grease.

As long as it doesn't get magical aiming powers somehow... such as an unnatural ability to shoot straight

I fully support this

I don't see how you could set up a windmill to a ballista without having some sort of autoloader or a clip or something. A trap version would be fine IMO, since you would be able to use them without your citizens freaking out, and make some particularly nasty traps (Indiana Jones Hallway of doom anyone?)

Also, this means that in addition to weapon traps and such, you could line a corridor with pre-loaded ballistas.
Code: [Select]
BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB
BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB
BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB
..BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB..
..BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB..

.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.
==#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#==
.BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB...
.BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB...
.BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB...
...BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB..
...BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB..
...BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB..
Legend:
Code: [Select]
#-Fortification
=-Wall
B-Ballista
^-Pressure plate
.-Floor
Total cost= 1 corridor, 51 mechanisms, 51 ballista parts, 17 ammo
Raw resources= 51 stone, 68 wood, plus optional tips.
