Oh God! Elephants!
« on: July 16, 2008, 11:12:37 pm »

Well, I found a really nice spot. A huge magma pipe, the first I've ever had. Plenty of trees, A river, nice climate, and best of all it's on a tremendous plateau, some fifteen Z-levels. Give me five years here and I challenge any goblin siege or cannibal elf incursion to take this place. I will make a fortress that would scoff at the juggernaut of the gods... except... Their are ELEPHANTS!

AHHHHHHHH!

I'm having nightmarish flashbacks to Boatmurdered, which is what got me into this game in the first place...

So, I'm betting five dwarfbucks I can tame the Elephants and put them to work cleaning up the local sasquatches.

Elephants are quite peaceful now.

Watch out for elves.

It's not a cliff, per se, but it is a very steep grade with lots of pleasantly removable slopes. And a 10 z level waterfall. Because it's just awesome like that.

Actually, the only downside is the presence of highwood. I didn't realize I was embarking on a good area.

Peaceful my beard! Why not ten minutes after arrival of of those malicious pachyderms slaughtered my poor huntsdwarf! You'd almost think it'd taken the slaughter of it's mate and being chased around hell for leather by a mad dwarf intent on beating it with a crossbow personally. Elephants are a menace! A Menace I tell you!

Oh geeze. Maybe this is the beginning of the Elephantine Dwarf-Murdering Spiral?

I'd really like the ability to make elephants all hunger for Dwarven flesh and thirst for Dwarven Blood again.

And you can actually run it on your computer? My location is about half that, maybe a little more, and no waterfall, and it's getting 30-40fps with seven dwarves. Of course, I have a crappy computer, but it was never this bad with the old version. I'm hoping that part of it is all the pathing errors and the new fix will make it run better.

Capture the elephants, tame the elephants, train them as war elephants, release on goblins.

Wait let me rephrase that:

Capture elephants, tame elephants, breed elephants, train war elephants, mount marksdwarves on elephants, release elephant on goblins, enjoy destruction.

Unless you have your Dwarves hunt them, Elephants are mostly harmless now. It's the goddamned unicorns you have to look out for.

My computer was built specifically to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R with power to spare. It can hack it, as long as I don't do anything clever with water. The site really is beautiful. It's just screaming for fortification.

A good omen today. One of my metalworkers was taken by a mood and constructed Akithzuglar, or WrathShips, an Iron Anvil. It menaces with spikes of Iron and Rhyolite, which are apparently useful for making fiddly bits out of iron. It's worth 133200 dwarfbucks, and is going to be installed in the magma smelter. This wondrous Anvil is clearly a gift and omen from the gods, extending their blessing to our settlement. A dwarven fortress built around such a fine anvil as this cannot fail, come elephant, goblin, or carp!

Highwood isn't good, it's savage. Feather trees are good.

I once had a desert covered in highwood and sugauros. Not barren at all.  :P

That sounds like a fun location.  Would you mind posting a screen and possibly the seed as well?
