Modding of items tied to skills and equipped with them.
« on: July 13, 2008, 04:23:27 am »

For now we have axes equipped when you enable the woodcutting on dwarf and picks when you enable digging.
I suggest to make the string in raws for items to enable this function.
I.e. if you put in entity_default for dwarves
[ITEMREQ:FISHING]
[ITEMREQ:WOODCUTTING]
[ITEMREQ:MINING]
this will mean that those skills will require specific items (with [SKILL:MINING] on pick for example and [SKILL:FISHING] on rod).

This will lead to 2 different nice possibilities
1) This will be a small "tools arc" which will allow you to make different races with different item requirements, i.e. if it's a race with blades on arms it can skip axes or a race of molemen can skip picks. Also it will allow different tools layouts for modders to use their imagination.
2) It will allow to equip your valuable dwarves with weapons of self-defence. I.e. if you tie some common job like "cleaning" or "burial" to some kind of weapon, let's call it "personal stiletto", the dwarves will have something to defend them against unexpected visitors.

... a race of molemen can skip picks....

Well, you've gotten my support! ;)

Seriously, nice idea.  This would be easy to work with, and very useful.

One issue, though, is things like axes, which have multiple uses (woodcutting and axe-combat).  Using something as a tool and as a weapon don't necessarily require the same skills, and that would need to be dealt with in the item subscription somehow.  Maybe add a [TOOL:(skill)] tag, along with the [SKILL:(skill)] tag?  Or [TOOL:-] and [COMBAT:-]?

Also, perhaps and [ITEMOPT:-] tag for civilizations that will use a tool if it is available, and perhaps get some bonus for it, but don't actually need it.  One can catch turtles without a fishing spear, but it's safer and easier to fish with the proper equipment.
