Shark pup numbers...
« on: July 10, 2008, 08:49:12 am »

While updating DF wiki-site, I noticed that sharks produce less pups than in real world. For example Blacktip reef shark really has 2 to 4 pups per year, in DF there will be only one per year. Is this because of sharks being too nasty critters for dwarves ("oh, I really love my shark skin thongs even though it cost that poor fisherdwarf his left leg...") or is there some other reason that I'm missing?

shark skin thongs

 :o

You do realise sharkskin was used as sandpaper for a long time right? The idea of a sharkskin g-string is just... eesh.
Hell, even aussie thongs (you guys probably call em flip flops or some such) would be bloody uncomfortable.

Birth rates in DF don't match up perfectly to those of real world critters. Catsplosion problems would be even worse if they did.

In real life, sharks die of old age. In DF, they live until they get fished or killed by an advnturer or other. So it would be too much to have a better breeding rate.

Shark leather isn't as outlandish as it sounds. They can make leather out of salmon skin and presumably they get rid of the scales first. So I'm sure they could tan shark skin in a similar fashion. And no one said the rough surface can only be on the inner side.

I'd like to see higher shark numbers, I've been playing an ocean map for three years in game and haven't seen a single shark. I have seen a spotted wobbegong, supposedly it's a fish but it sounds like something else to me...

Does it?  I thought non-dwarves and non-adventurers don't have to eat yet.

Exactly.  If there was starvation you could have higher birth rates.
