Having already posted this on the mods forum i was directed here and have made a few changes to my ideas.
Change a piece of clothing or an object like a cup (y'know, that circle type thing) to an object called a medal and assign it to dwarfs based on what they have do i.e. rescuing a dwarf under fire. extreme bravery, assaulting a bronze colossus and only breaking a couple dozen bones or similar. It gives the dwarf a happy thought but can not be traded. once you assign it you can write the description (for bravery under fire blah blah blah)
please comment on this including constructive criticism and blatant attempts to make me feel small (It's the internet baby! not possible!)

or rather than user influenced, it could be implemented with the same system as for 'titles' engravings etc. If you have sme medal crafts spare, there's a chance your mayor/noble will grab one and reward the dworf, could provide nobles with something mildly useful to do at the same time..

yea thats a good idea but I would like to write the engravings on the medal because then you can tailor it to your tastes while at the same time reduce cpu usage (y'know, with the computer having to track what they were doing at the time and such)

personally i find half the fun of df is the huge number of things i have no control over, but eh. the cpu is already keeping track of that stuff for engravers, artifacts, legends..
