My dwarfs sparred and practiced shooting for a while then just stopped. they are skilled wrestlers and marksdwarves but they just stopped. is this due to skill? do they stop after a while?

Use v to view them, then press w to see injuries and try to scroll down with + and -. Dwarves with spine injuries will not train for the rest of their lives (even bruises to their spine will not heal). Dwarves with yellow and red wounds will crawl into a nearby bed to rest. Dwarves with yellow or red spine injuries will never walk again.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Yeah, I believe he'll still fight. You can actually equip him with a crossbow, then he'll still train at an archery range when he's not on duty, even though he can never spar again.

I think the body parts that permanently prevent sparring when injured are brain, neck, upper spine and lower spine.

As for your marksdwarves, they won't practice unless they have wood/bone bolts.
