Dwarf Fortress Wiki
« on: August 15, 2006, 04:25:00 pm »

Some of you may know already that a bunch of folks on the SomethingAwful (SA) forums started to go crazy over this game, me included. A few members suggested there should be a wiki about it since there is so much stuff to learn.

So yeah, I started an unofficial Dwarf Fortress wiki.
Linkage: http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com

I did not request the permission to Toady One and I hope I am not stepping on his grass. This is done out of respect for such an addictive game.

We're all gentlemen, please avoid crippling the wiki, I can always revert the changes.

Cheers!

Wikis don't need permission, yo. (except for all that copyright crap, and all that other stuff)

There is This Thread, where people were discussing setting one up.  This might resolve the situation.  It is up to the Wiki Community.  I'll link to whatever you guys decide on.

Added some information about workshops.  If it's incorrect, it's up to others to fix it!

You can copy anything you want between the two Wikis anyway as long as you attribute it in the edit summary, since they're both using the GNU FDL license.

Regarding the Wiki issue, I've thrown my vote (for what it's worth) in with the mediawiki one at  http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php . My reasoning is simple; a dedicated wiki allows more freedom of content than a subsection with either wikipedia or gameinfo. To that end I have worked on, and am working on, wiki structure. Things like the community and main pages, page categories, some project pages, etc.

Anyway, check it out and throw in whatever information you have. The important thing to remember is that as long as you put the stuffing in, other people can come in and tidy it all up.  :).

Aside from content, it still needs template pages, stub listings, possibly disambiguation pages and similar things. The main issue I see at the moment is dealing with the difference in Adventure and Fortress modes. I've tried tackling it with the parenthesis feature of mediawiki... for example:

FAQ (Fortress)

is a different page than

FAQ (Adventure)

When linking, mediawiki will automatically drop the (xxx)'s from the name if you put a pipe ( '|' character ) at the end of the link.

Eg:

[[FAQ (Adventyre)|]] becomes FAQ

[[FAQ (Fortress)|]] also becomes FAQ, but links to another page.

Of course, there may be other ways of seperating them, or maybe the two modes should be kept together? What wonders await?
