Are my dwarfs depressed?

Once again I must humbly ask for your help. If my dwarfs flash a blue arrow pointing downwards then are they depressed? or is it something else?

Thirsty. Brown for food, white for sleep and red for anger/misery.

I think it is explained in the DF Wiki. Don't worry about a little thirst, as dwarves often sleep for so long they get thirsty. Just make sure they can drink their breakfast.

Nope. Water is only needed for stone floors and wounded dwarves. You can plant in soil layers fine without water. It used to be a problem before that you needed to irrigate a floor to make a farm on it. Not anymore.

All you need is underground soil, a farm plot, seeds for a brewable plant, and a still.

Then there are other things, like barells, a brewer, and other dwarves to consume the stuff.

That Wiki is the Bible of every DF player. Keep it open when you play unless it becomes too much of a FPS hogger. Then just browse through it and make a list of good ideas for later.
