Pick
« on: June 21, 2008, 08:15:19 pm »

Heh, I just bought  a new mattock to dig out my garden, and it's been really useful.
So, now I'm wondering...what kind of damage does a pick do, and what skill do you use to wield it?  Or are picks even useable in Adventure Mode?

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

They do piercing damage, and they have a pretty high critical rate.  They use the mining skill in combat, which means that your miners will become very good at using them in combat just by digging out your fort.

And although they are usable in adventure mode, they're hard to come by.  You need to either kill a miner, or grab a specially-made one from an abandoned fortress.

Adventurers currently aren't allowed to dig with picks. I could imagine a Power Goal where the adventurer digs out a small cave, builds a fire to ward off monsters and keep him warm, and sleeps through the night there.

For now it's just best to stick with spears if you want to do piercing type damage.

Unless you want to use a pick for flavor, and have the stats to get by with it.  Also, that gives you an extra skill to try to reach legendary in...

Hmm...okay, thanks.
Yeah, I kinda just want it for flavour.
Does using a pick in Adventure Mode train mining skill (and make me better at picking monsters).  If not, can I enable it?  How do they stack up as throwing weapons?

And does anyone have any amusing anecdotes about throwing picks?   ;D

Yeah, you train mining skill by using it in battle.  As far as battle is concerned, it's a spear that does 60% of normal damage.  As for being a thrown weapon, they're not much different than any other thrown weapon, really.  They do what they do at close range, except they're doing it at long range.

It can get stuck in people, though.  That's always fun.

That gives me a curious idea for a fortress mode achievement...

train a miner from dabbling to legendary, solely by having him fight with a pick.

I'm imagining a grizzled miner with a lifetime of arena combat under his belt, and a pick that's soaked through and through with blood.

Actually using picks = Adventurer Skills Arc
The Arc when we get all the same skills that our Fortressy dwarves do.

I can imagine an adventurer offering to 'help out' a mayor by taking stock of everything in the town. Then coming back at night to steal it all  ;D

Even better: Advertise yourself as an armor hauler in a fort that already has masterwork adamantine.
