Framerate cut to 1/3
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:00:47 pm »

Dwarf Fortress, previously, would run at a steady 100 fps when idle, paused, or the like. It dropped to around eighty during gameplay most of the time. Now it won't run faster than 35 fps even just at the title screen.
This has been a problem since I installed my new video card, a radeon x1550. It's the only thing I changed that might have caused the problem. Does anyone know how I can fix it?
Also I'm not entirely certain this is the right place to post this, but it's not a bug in DF itself as far as I know. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum.

Also, hello forum people! Nice to meet you maybe.

The massive drop is caused by Artifacts, or, more specifically, their creators.

And traders who leave sometimes make it happen as well.

Since it's happening at the title screen, it won't be artifacts or traders, and the video card sounds like a good bet.  It might have to do with the drivers/OpenGL support.

A reply from Toady One himself, and so soon! I, and my little thread, am honored!

I suspected that might be the problem, but so far all attempts to fix it have failed. Admittedly, "all attempts" has been waiting for new drivers to be released and seeing if they fix the problem.
They haven't.
I'm now trying to find information about making openGL play nice with my card, but so far google has not offered me anything helpful.

My bad, I guess I passed over the part about it being slow on the title as well while I was skimming. You could try disabling your cards OpenGL and Graphics options, setting them to use the game's settings, not its. Im not sure if you have that option with your cards drivers, since I have an Nvidia card.

The Catalyst control center thingy provided me with several buttons relating to application settings, custom graphics and a few for OpenGL specifically, but all the various combinations I tried showed no framerate improvement. Might there be a different program I can adjust my card's settings with?

I have successfully resolved the issue, by entirely scrapping the official drivers and applying ones acquired from http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=ati.
Dwarf Fortress now blazes along at 100 glorious frames per second, and it is -wonderful-.
I pray that my findings may prove useful to some other poor soul.

This must be related to my computer (a laptop's) max of 28-32 FPS, even at the title screen. Given that the graphics are the much maligned Intel brand, I'm probably out of luck; I doubt anyone has made modified drivers for this crappy integrated set.

A quick search shows me the latest video drivers on the Intel site being from 2002, which seems a bit lazy of them. I hope I was looking in the wrong place. You might want to search for updated drivers anyway, Intel might be hiding something useful somewhere on the internet.
