So, graphics sets...
« on: July 01, 2008, 06:01:42 am »

I'm curious, would it be right to refer to graphics replacements, like Mike Mayday's mod for example, as having 8-bit graphics?

Honestly I'm only familiar with the term "8-bit" as it relates to the computers running games with said graphics, and wasn't terribly clear on what denotes "8-bit" graphics, except perhaps their affiliation with those games.

I think some of the images used by that set in particular are liberated from a few such games... at least I think I've seen a red mage running around human towns... so I'm pretty sure the term fits, but being a bored pedantic slothman I figured I'd ask similar bored pedantic (blank) for an answer  :P

Not really, the '8-bit' thing referred to the hardware of the system not the graphics. People say '8-bit' graphics because it's easier then saying 'graphics like the original nintendo had'.

Yup. Mike, at least, is up front about it though.

I think 8-bit graphics refers to the color depth being output by the system, which happens to be the same as the hardware capability of the system. NES was using 256 colors, AFAIK.

Yeah, "bit" is usually referred to the available color depth.  8-bit is a generalization to anything with a 256-color pallet or less, regardless of the actual color depth.  IBM-compatibles running Basic, for example, usually had a 4-bit pallet, or 16 colors.  The original Game Boy had 2-bit graphics.

2-bit? What is that, like different shades of grey?

Someone is showing their (lack of) age!

The original GB did indeed have exactly four colors - black, white, light gray and dark gray.

Pretty smart though. He inferred from the meaning of 4, 8, and 16-bit that 2-bit wasn't much and made a fairly accurate guess as to what it is.

Look up Ye Olde Game Boye of our days, lad. Truly it was an impressive time.

And all of them on your standard sickly green monochrome LCD panel, too!

In the spriting (or as the pretentious call it, "pixel art") community, 8-bit refers to the shading and color styles typical of games on the NES or other 256 color consoles, 16-bit to SNES and equivalents, and 32-bit to the Playstation.  The difference lies mainly in the degree of shading, size of the sprites, and how outlines are done.
