Standalone reveal.exe?
« on: June 29, 2008, 10:27:49 am »

I stopped playing DF for a while due to life-related things.  It looks like my old reveal.exe doesn't work with the current version.  Looking at the wiki, it apparently is now incorporated into a package that requires .NET.  For various reasons installing .NET is unlikely in the near future (and also the app *was* working without it, so there's nothing inherent in what this particular utility does that requires .NET ...).  Anyway: anyone know if this is available anywhere in a form that allows it to run on its own, with the current DF version?

I do know about the prospector utility, but for what I have in mind reveal is better.  That, or create two worlds with the same seed , start two forts in the same place, and have one be just 7 miners who dig out a grid through the entire mountain to get the info I want.  But that's a pain.

From what I understand, there is a memory.ini that can make an older version of reveal.exe work with newer versions of the DF.

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/User_talk:Rick/Old
On the bottom of that page it has settings for the memory.ini that is supposed to make reveal work with the current version of DF.

However, I can't verify if that will really work because I've never been able to find a working download of the standalone reveal.exe (all downloads have either expired and have a corrupt zip). If this does work for you, could you please upload your reveal.exe somewhere so others could make use of it?

Mine doesn't even use a memory.INI file.  I do vaguely recall it was getting recompiled and rereleased with each new DF version.
