Utility request: Something to fetch gems for fey dwarves
« on: August 08, 2007, 06:05:00 am »

Is it possible for somebody to make a utility to create gem clusters at the designated spot?

It's realy annoying if dwarves go fey and ask for gems which i don't have any chance of getting any time soon.

So could somebody make this as a temporary fix till more sensible moods are implented?

I second this request.  I often end up with a shortage of gems when moody dwarves need them (I don't cheat in normal games but moods are just a nuisance when I'm working on my current project of setting up a world for adventurers), and I believe this is the only thing (besides trees and plants) that can't be infinitely generated with utilities.

If you cheat to quickly set up a world for adventurers, why don't you just start the fortress mode with a few dozen legendary dwarves?

Just set up a flood-workshop to kill the moody dwarf.  It's a shame, yes, but dwarves are available in ample supply.

Two-thirds of the time they don't hurt anyone else anyway, and even when they go berserk they're usually not that tough (since they failed to become legendary and likely have no weapons or armor).  A well-equipped squad ought to be able to take them out no problem.

You don't need to get an artifact from every single moody dwarf.  Other moody dwarves with more reasonable requests will come along eventually.

(And, of course, always make some of every kind of glass, since that sometimes satisfies gem requests...  and never, ever, ever, use gems for anything but artifacts.  Even if a noble demands gems, ignore it...  You can afford to ignore the occasional request with no huge disasters.  If they really like gems and keep asking for them, kill them.  You'd run out of gems to satisfy their requests eventually anyway, so you're just speeding up the inevitable and avoiding wasting all your gems first.  Artifacts and legendary dwarves are nearly irreplaceable.  Nobles aren't...  when your nobles start putting your legendaries and artifacts in danger, even a little, it's time to introduce them to Mr. Flood Room.)

i intentionally build all my workshops by themselves within rooms with doors so if i have a troublesome moody dwarf i just lock him in and say a small prayer for his lost soul.  i can always build another workshop (which is why one of my first steps when i have magma forgery going is to produce a new anvil...).  if i notice that the dwarf is reduced to a gibbering fool i let him out and they ususally wander outside and die (somehow), otherwise the gang will clear out the corpse after i remember to unlock the door.  doesn't seem to cause any big issues in my fortresses.

Well actually most of the dwarves I have are near legentary or legendary, and when they do go berserk I usually have to magma my fortress.

Yeah, that suck when it happen. I had two workers almost to master when they got into a mood in my last fortress, and I never managed to give them what they wanted... I'm pretty sure they got mad because I either didn't have glass gems or they were asking for some kind of specific bone or leather I didn't have at the time...

It's kind of sad when you train a dwarf from dabbling to almost master only to have it decapitated by your guards when he gets mad. If the dwarf is already legendary (or double legendary, I had lot of those in my last fortress) it can be pretty dangerous too. Especially if they already have a pick or an axe in their hand...

That is why I always, ALWAYS have the mood dwarves in workshops in rooms with lockable doors.

And even if you have a dwarf take over a shop in a hallway or somthing, you know you can attach doors to the solid (impassible) bits of the workshop? Then lock that door and hang another, until it is surrounded by doors.

If the dwarf goes melancholy or crazy, either let him out or let him rot in there. If he goes berserk, either assemble the troops, THEN let him out, or keep it locked until he dies of hunger/thirst. Then haul the corpse out.

Berserk dwarves (from moods, anyway) should never be a problem.

I do start with high-level dwarves for these runs, but that doesn't stop them from getting moods, and their moods are more dangerous if they don't get what they want.  Ever have a dwarf with six legendary skills rampaging through your fortress?  And I certainly don't want to lose those dwarves.  I also can't set up a flooding room because it would interfere with the design of the fortress.

But even setting moody dwarves aside, it would be useful in certain situations (such as the one I'm in now, planning out a fortress for adventurers and not to play DF mode) to have an unlimited source of gems.  I'm no coder or hacker, so I would have no idea how difficult it would be to make a utility to produce gems rather than ore or rock or mud, etc., but if it's not too much trouble, I would definitely greatly appreciate it if someone could whip one up.
