Newbie Question
« on: June 17, 2008, 10:37:11 pm »

Hey, I'm new here. I have a question. If, in the units screen, it shows no fish, does that mean your fisherdwarf is useless? If the answer is no, does fishing in murky pools ever give fish? Please help out a newbie! I've got my first successful fortress (I think) up and running, but my food is starting to go low.

Short answer is yes, you can still catch fish. Fish are basically vermin and don't show up on the unit list.

Same answer for the murky pools?

Murky pools will give an infinite supply of turtles as I recall.
Make sure you set up a refuse stockpile indoors that accepts only shells.
And whatever you do, do not COOK said turtles.
The last thing you want is an insane fey craftsdwarf because you don't have any shells.

All right. Wait, how do you make it so you don't cook turtles? I assume it's through the kitchen menu from the fortress overview screen.

Correct.
Stuff only shows up there once you actually have it, however.
Of course, if you don't set your kitchen to make meals anyway, you don't have to worry about it.

Fish that show up on the units screen are "big" fish - too big to catch with a line and rod. The fish that fisherdwarves go after are smaller ones (and turtles). However, their occupation frequently takes them close to big fish, which can be very dangerous in the current version...
