I just realized that I get 80-90 FPS, on embark now. I used to get 5-15. And this is on a MAXIMUM area. Heck yes.

Also, no graphical glitches. My recommendation to everyone having problems, which I don't know if it would help or not, but usually does: update your video drivers. I know they tell you to do this all the time and it seems unnecessary, but it really can help.

Can you update from 39f by pasting just the init and the .exe or do you have to start over completely from scratch?
You can never update by putting the new stuff in the old folder.
Never.
You can put your old saves in the new version, but you cannot, under any circumstances, put the new version over the old version.
It just causes all sorts of wonkiness.
I've got nothing on plant/animal reactions anymore.
The old method using the materials with numbers from the item tokens wiki page no longer works.
Just using the animal/plant in the matgloss section didn't work either.
Gah, Toady, we need documentation.

So is it just a fluke that my DF folder was created back in the 2D days and I've always every just unzipped everything over what used to be there, yet never had a problem (NOT counting the time only 14 of the 300-something savegame files didn't copy correctly from a backup once)
Same thing happened with me, except not all the way from 2D.

And neither can I...

As an added bonus this new version is spectacularly less demanding on my video card,

DF was hard on your video card? Pseudo-ASCII was hard on your video card?

Man, OpenGL must be a really inefficient program. Or I just don't know anything about programming.

I've read quite a bit about ati users having trouble with the 8.7 cats running opengl progs. I know when I finally got my new machine together and fired up DF for the first time I was rather miffed to find I was getting a fps of 10-15, The dwarf fortress end of my problems were cleared up with 8.8 beta.

More improtantly I wont need a gazillion bags to run a fort using food as the trade good of choice.

Actually, a lot of modern graphic cards have problems with OpenGL. The Nvidia 8 and 9 series have historically sucked ass at OpenGL.

Additions:
(*) you can save your embark settings for later use
(*) added note-taking ability for embark screen
(*) added forbid-on-death orders for your corpses, other non-hunted corpses, your items and other items
(*) added forbid order for fired projectiles
Neat.

(*) made dwarves prefer to combine items in existing bags/barrels/bins with init options to govern this behavior
We love our Toady king. :D

(*) made obsidian an economic stone
Excellent! When does it make it on to the site finder? :D ;)

You mean that a maximum area is actually at a playable speed now instead of being at a crawlfest?

HOT DAMN! Really looking forward to the bag savings! My clothiers may actually be doing something other than sewing little mars symbols! Not sure if their little hearts will survive the excitement... ::)

Thanks, Toady!

I'm not sure about a maximum area, but my old 6x6 fortress runs at 60-75 FPS now compared to the 10-25 it used to get.  So yeah, I'd say there's some improvement there.
