Difference between eyestalks/eyes?

Is there some sort of reason why there are two seperate body parts, eyes and eyestalks, and they are exactly the same? Couldn't one just stick some eyes on the creature and make the game call it an eyestalk?

There's no difference that eye can see.  :)

Speaking of which, Toady made a typo!!! The "EAR" bodyparts have "REYE" and "LEYE" labels!!! Not that it has an impact in-game, though.  :p

Yeah, the eyestalks could have been bodyglosses. Though I suppose Toady wanted, at some point, to add a distinct difference that would allow the eyestalks to be chopped off without hitting the head.

That means Left eye and Right eye.

I guess Toady was in a copypasting mood similar to mine when I was making the MA mod:

Yeah, I noticed that as well when I was digging around for some other body part I could copy from.  I also noticed the oddity with the eyestalks.

Simple enough fix though.  But it would mean you'd have to grab each stalk individually for gouging.

Or tie the eyestalks in a knot. Then tear the nose off with your left elbow.

Ah, eyestalks weren't supposed to be [EMBEDDED].  You're supposed to be able to slash them off, rather than slashing them out.

They are in my mod =). I just haven't published them yet, and their eyes are ON eyestalks, I on't want to change it and it's intended: they don't have "head" but eyestalks connected to the "bodyhead" which is actually upperbody, and eyes have SIGHT and special ray attacks. This way it's possible to grab eyestalks and thus to limit his attacks (if you grap paralyzing eye's eyestalk, he won't be able to cast the stun ray).

I think eyestalks are in game for no reason, they were just "made". Their tags are also reye and leye, the same like for eyes. They could be made with bodygloss this way, and actually in-game they are the same as eyes and can't be wrestled with =). You need a custom body to make them as they should be.
