Heaters/Freezers - More jobs for the Mechanics
« on: December 22, 2007, 10:09:00 pm »

Is it possible to mod in a special furniture/mechanism that generates extremes of heat and/or cold when activated and possibly powered by a external power source. (Possibly through a gnomishly-complicated system of expanding and contracting copper bands)

Possibly making it even more complicated by giving it four settings, "line, cone, aura and off."

I like building large "lab fortresses" with rather morbid experiments involving mind boggling feats of engineering or morbidly pointless torture of goblins. (Our last experiment found that under drowning induced stress, a goblin can swim down three levels, open a forgotten maintenance hatch and flee to the surface. We caught the pair shortly afterwards. Not sure if we should try again with a locked hatch or just toss them into the "Recycler".)

And I feel that having a way to play with heat and cold respectively would add that extra sinister touch to my.. "experiments". - Also, being able to freeze up  and clear out that awkard flooding accident in test chamber six would be neat.

Plus I don't really want to mess with utility programs too much, x_x

hmmm... how Mengele.

In short, the answer to your question is no.
Modding is quite limited right now.  All we can do is create new forms of existing game objects.  However if you can find a glacier map with magma, you can play with extreme temperatures.

Actually... Can rock types use the [FIXED_TEMP] tag?

In my defence, all the goblins being ritually hacked into pieces tried to kidnap our lab personell's children for their own ends.

Bah, glacier sites are so unreliable. And we'd have no source of fresh subjects. (Gobsicles). Unless you count the fire imps.

Eh, might as well toss the remaining subjects into the magma forge vent and focus on the hydraulics departement instead.

Thanks anyway.

Oh I have nothing against torturing goblins to death.  In fact it sounds so fun I might have to try it myself.   :D

I think so.

I experimented a bunch with metal though and it didn't seem to work very well though. even setting the temperature to just under the max recognized by the game would not cause creatures standing next to it to burst into flames or anything, nor would it boil water or anything like that. Making a weapon out of it would cause the dwarf's hand to very rapidly turn red when he held it though, and sometimes set him on fire before he dropped it.

setting metal to very cold had similar effects, in that it didn't do much until someone actually picked it up. It didn't even freeze water it was dropped in  :(

I didn't test much with stone, so maybe stone works better. let us know?

I imagine it wouldn't since metal is just a subtype of stone.

Wait wait wait, I think there is a possible solution to ziz, I mean this.

It will require a Rube Goldbergian effort, but bear with me.

Okay, the only things in the game with temperatures that affects the immideate surroundings are, critters. - Namely spirits of fire.

Now, I have read that pets can be manufactured in smiths.

So what if we were to make a tameable pet, with a extreme temperature rating, which can be manufactured and consigned to a cage?

On the other hand...

What if you had heated floor tiles? Maybe require them to be attached to a heater in some way, or simply just be heated floor the temperature of say, a temperate climate?

Say you run water through this heated path before sending it towards your ice? A sort of hot water tank if you will...

Would running molten magma under these "heated" tiles heat water flowing across them?
