[flier] civilisations
« on: December 22, 2007, 03:58:00 pm »

Has anyone tried civilisations in fortress mode with wings and the [flier] tag? I've been having problems with the citizens running off cliffs and spamming "dangerous terrain" job cancellations. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm using version .33g.

Dwarves don't have the AI to deal with flying yet.

Example:

Dwarf:  "I can fly!  I can fly! I can- oh shit, I'm flying. PANIC ATTACK!!!"

Now you have a dwarf who has managed to get himself stuck.  In air.

Someone actually tried this a while back. They still use the pathfinding as if they were on the ground walking. But, they can still fly if that makes the trip shorter.

Let's say you made a winding path to your fortress entrance, fully walkable but very long and there is no other way for a ground-based critter. However, above the path is a long bridge usually kept retracted. The bridge and the path lead to the same area.

However, if the bridge is destroyed by a tantruming baby or something, dwarves will fly over the winding path, seeing that the other side IS accessible by walking, but realizing flying is faster.

If you were to create a hangar-style entrance, with no way up for a non-flying creature, dwarves wouldn't fly into the base, seeing that there is no walkable path but not recognizing their flight capabilities.

How is dwarf AI different from, say, batmen AI? Batmen find their flying way out of the quite assuredly unreachable depths of the chasm quite fine, I think. At least I was pestered by a few of them that did.

Yes, but they aren't having to do actual jobs, there just wandering until they see an enemy.
