A little while into building my first fort, this strange purple miasma stuff appears. Starts small, spreads out then recedes back to where it came from. Continues doing this over and over. What is it, and how do I rid myself of it?

I think that's the smell of rot. You get rid of it by making a refuse stockpile somewhere outside the fortress where dwarves will throw out their garbage.
