DF Micro Fictions
« on: July 23, 2007, 01:09:00 am »

A lot of the charm of DF is the fact that these little dwarves, and the wandering heroes, live out stories on their own, without direct control or scripting. These can be surreal, such as a story of a dwarf killed for not making kitten leather dresses for a noble, but often they can be made sensible with a little interpretation. There are several of these simple stories (and some that are quite complex) here on this forum. I think that these are some of the most fascinating parts of DF, and so I wanted to know: what are some of the stories you have seen in your fortresses/heroes? Try to keep them in the range of a short parable (1-3 paragraphs, I guess), but please, don't let me constrain your muse!

I was once playing a fortress where I named all the dwarves after people I know. One of my friends wanted to know if her dwarf had been throwing up any lately. She hadn't, so I drafted her and sent her out in the sun until she painted the grass with some lovely green puddles.

Soon after this, I had my own dwarven alter ego decorate my vomiting friend's room. He engraved a superiorly designed image of a shining sun on her floor.

I hope she appreciated my/his little joke!

I quickly namned some of my dwarfs after people in class.
Not a big thing untill one of them gave birth to twins.

It might be good to gender check the dwarfs before nameing them. ^^
The sons were later stolen by goblins.

Poking around with a DFParser.
Bodypart names, creatures names in one easily overviewable place.

Oh my new (old) picture?

I named a dwarf after some usernames at a forum I went to for fun once. As soon as I finished name one after myself, he goes beserk and tears another dwarf's arm clear off(well, not really tore off. woodcutter, he had an axe.). It breaks into carnage since I had no military yet and the dwarf kills 5 others before another one kills him.

I check the names of the dead and all 5 were ironically people I didn't like too much on the forum that I just added anyways. Maybe they'd have an accident involving levers or something.

The next reply on the thread about the fortress was "So whats my dwarf been up to?" by one of the slaughtered guys.

Here's a new one- So, I lift the drawbridge to my fortress, and before It can lift up, a Child runs out on it! Needless to say, the child's sibling is distraught. Here is what his thoughts page said:
He lost a sibling to tradegy lately. He was forced to endure the decay of a sibling lately. He has witnessed death lately. He has admired a fine trap recently.
Granted. that last one was not likely related to the others but it strikes me like this: "As the child watched his sibling explode into gore under the moving drawbridge, Cerol was at first horrified, yet in a moment his heart changed. The power to take a life with the ease of a senseless machine- he would have that someday, if only to avenge his brother."
eh?
