find some water with a ramp. Dive in, swim around a little bit, then hop back out to catch your breath.

its a real pain, but eventually you will be able to swim without drowning.

You don't need a ramp, just just use alt+(the direction of the pool you'd like to jump into). As long as you aren't drowning and the water doesn't freeze, it should be safe to sleep in the water.

If your around long enough in a tropical map if theres any water in the pools it starts evaporating away.  That will give you water pools below 7 depth, but it seems kinda hit or miss weather the water realizes it should dry up before you get there or not.  

Sometimes you get empty pools, sometimes you get full pools that dry up quickly.
