I was sneaking around in a human town when, all of the sudden, this guard runs up behind me, runs into me and falls over, then gets up and keeps going, and throught the whole thing he never noticed me.

Was he wearing stormtrooper armor or a nazi uniform?
That sounds like a George Lucas Guard to me.

After playing in adventure mode for a while, I noticed all of the NPC characters don't take into account what's around them when they travel. This accounts for the many deaths I've seen when the docile Elephant / carp accidentally bumps into an Elf, leading them to slaughter the whole wall-less village

I was playing a game called "Thief" several years ago, and in that game you're supposed to avoid detection.

Well, I found myself in the middle of a well-lit room, with a peasant in the doorway looking in.  She'd heard a noise, and was coming to investigate.

Apparently, this peasant was blind, because she wandered into the room, looking intently into every corner, and eventually bumped into me in the middle.

This didn't stop her looking, however.  She shaded her eyes and started looking from left to right, trying to find me.  After doing that for a bit, she started to move forward again.  Or at least tried to.  I was in her way.

So I'm standing there, with a woman who is insistently trying to walk into me, when I sidestep her to see where she'd go.

She hears my footfall, and runs out of the room screaming for the castle guards.

Not exactly Dwarf Fortress, but I haven't found a way to get it to stop lagging enough for me to play adventure mode comfortably.  Thought I'd share anyways.

If you blow up a zombie with a fire arrow, it can no longer see or hear you, so that counts as avoiding detection in my book.  :)
I've had loads of fun with that game.

But speaking of stupid, I think that Dwarf Fortress has some semblance to Futurama. It's similar in that ridiculous kinda way, where I think that if the dwarves were in future, they'd do some of those things. For some reason I can easily imagine dwarven scientists increasing the speed of light to allow faster travel...
