Finding less than 7/7 and greater than 0 pools of water?

Is climate the trick? I have weather turned off but not temperature, could that be my problem?

You need to find a lake with ramps on the edges. It's the only way to get into water without being trapped and dying.

An alternate solution is to sleep on the edge of an ocean, where the waves hit you. You learn swimming from waves, or atleast walking into them.

I found a "rogue puddle" in a dwarven hall once. I could pick up water from it, which was nice, because I was an elf and had no waterskin.  :)

i had a swimmer that could jump into 7/7 water and back out on a non ramp wall, i had to hold ALT and press the direction to get out but it worked

You have to be at least a novice swimmer to do that. You'll drown before you can achieve "novice swimmer" if you can't swim though.

I always start all my adventure mode characters as novice swimmers.  With that, you can easily enter water with ALT and train as high as you like, gaining stats the whole time...  I'd say it's one of the most valuable starting skills you can have.  Any other skill, you can train from scratch one way or another...  but training swimming completely from scratch is almost impossible, while training it from novice is dead easy.

My favorite starting build is either "Expert Weapon + Standard Shield + Standard Armor + Novice Swimmer" or "Talented Weapon + Talented Shield + Novice Swimmer". Novice swimmer is absolutely necessary, and has allowed me to survive by hiding in murky pools from time to time. It's quick way to die in a non-warm environment though, the pool once froze the turn after I crawled ashore.

Hmm, strange, I started my character off with Novice Swimmer but they still drown in water. Whereas my last character started with nothing I believe and only died once the water froze on him.

When you use ALT + Direction, and it prompts you where you want to move, you HAVE to select "Murky Pool."

If you select Open Space you'll jump in and drown.

ALT-move didn't seem to work for me getting out of a pool of water without ramps. My swimming skill was proficient, so that wasn't it. Perhaps it was due to the water being 5 or 6 depth rather than 7/7?

Try finding a water fall.  The water that's on its way to plunge over the falls will grade down from 7 to 1 as it gets closer to the brink.  That means you can find the spot where it's changing from 4 to 3 and train your skill there.  You'll get pushed around a bit, but always towards shallower water.

Of course, you'll have to walk off the bank, land on your ass, and then get yourself to at least novice swimmer before you can climb out again.

Also: warm tropical rivers can be amazing places to train combat skills on well equipped twinks.  You can herd the fish until they start tripping over each other, which will let you catch up to them. When you start counter attacking 3 or 4 of them on a turn it makes for quick training.

Plus you get to exact your revenge on all those carp.
