But it's a bargain at only 40,000 dwarfbucks!

I think it was a monkey because he wasted so many valuable gems making a stupid ring instead of creating the Golden Shaft of Malice, a Golden Spear.

Or perhaps, upon offering the ring to a potential bride, she can say "Show me your  monkey!"

What you have there is nice and all, but maybe a bit too plain for her tastes; I'd suggest seeing how many megabeast bones and metal studs you can fasten onto it. And don't forget the lesser gems; a bit of opal and spinel should complement what is already there quite nicely.

All in all, though, not bad for a work in progress!

I wonder what would happen if someone proposed with a dwarf fortress ring...

Nice work though.

Damn...  Can you imagine what that would've looked like if it were an artifact?  See some weirdo dwarf running around, picking up some platinum, a black diamond, a yellow diamond, a green diamond, a clear diamond, a star sapphire, a ruby, a faint yellow diamond, a blue diamond, and a regular sapphire.

It's a few items over the limit, but I think you get the idea.
Crikey, you'd go ballistic if he missed out on the hwole thing because he didn't have some silk cloth.

I'd probably be going ballistic anyways...  Precious metals and gems are not to be used in artifacts, as they are supposed to be stockpiled for use in artifacts.  With all the materials being used up for making artifacts, what would happen if an artifact needed one of those materials?  I think you can see the logic in that.

For the record this was not deliberate on my part.  I have a legendary metalcrafter who made the ring and a legendary gem setter who did the gems.  He could have chosen any of my thousands of -claystone mugs- or some other piece of crap to encrust, but he kept going back to this ring.  This supports the hypothesis that decorations tend to go to more valuable objects.

You're telling me that you've never had an artifact pine mug created that is worth gobs, or a turtle bone cage?

I had a cage worth six digits and a mug worth nearly as much, but not the pine mug.. it was a chalk mug, I believe.

I think its totally random what item they create.  I have a number of awe inspiring flood gates, chests and armor stands.  Merely placing them into the room of a noble increases the quality of that room significantly.  I only needed to put in an artifact coffin in a small tomb for the Queen to meet her requirements, no other adornments.

Dwarves will take the nearest item to the workshop to add gems/studs/decorations to.  This includes directly above, below and in the workshop.  If there was nothing else in the workshop and nowhere to put the ring between encrustings, or the jeweller was just on a roll, it would have been picked every time.

That's a free ticket into the beard of any ladydwarf in the entire fortress.

Use it wisely...
