Visiting your still living, still functioning Fortress i
« on: January 01, 2008, 02:15:00 am »

Is this, or will this ever be possible? I would love to be able to go back and forth between the two/three modes on the same world without having to abandon my fortress. I assume if the Adv. Mode towns can run themselves, then there should be some way that the Fortress can "idle."

Alas, no. You can retire an adventurer, start a fort, abandon the fort, and go back to the adventurer, but you can't visit a still-living fort of yours in adv. mode.

I think and hope the visiting of your own forts still alive will get in sooner or later, this most certainly WILL happen, however most probobly it lies several years into the future.

Considering how much faster time passes in fortress mode (and is rather abstracted anyway), handing over control to the computer for the timespan of a typical adventure should be fine, though you would expect that the fortress probably wouldn't progress much under computer control (you probably don't want the computer digging out a huge cavern that you had planned to use as apartments anyway).  As long as the fortress was set up to be more or less self-sufficient beforehand, it should be fine under automation for a short period of time.

My question is, what becomes of adventurers who retire in a living fortress?  Do they join the population?  And are adventurers taken from the population of a living fortress, or will the ability to retire/start from a living fortress simply not be included?

It would certainly make for an interesting sitation if you had just stolen something from the fortress when you "retired" your character and started up the fortress again.

you should be able to pick an embark location from adventurer mode

that would make BOTH games much more fun.

I think it is planned for the future...

Personally, I think it would be great to have it so that when your world famous axe-dwarf adventurer loses his right arm to a dragon, he can travel to your fortress and retire there.

Who knows, when you go back to controlling the place he might even become mayor  :D

(That would require 'people skills' to be added to adventure mode though...)

Maybe a retired adventurer could settle down as crazed hermit, yay! Every big city/fortress/whatever needs a crazed hermit!

You could create guarded dungeons. Y'know, with armed dwarves and a lot of coins in there.

That would require some sort of system of standing orders, such as "Attack anyone who enters this door that isn't one of us." This would not be a bad idea.

And it would be better if traps in adventurer mode actually worked.

You can turn them on in the ini file.
The main problem with traps are cage traps in Adv mode, though.
There is no way to escape from them.
