Underrated Stories & Personal Favorites
« on: November 04, 2024, 11:44:39 pm »

I hope this topic isn't too meta for this board, but it seemed to fit here better than any of the other ones.

There have been a handful of stories and succession games in Dwarf Fortress over the years that have achieved a reasonable degree of Internet fame. Boatmurdered, of course, is the most obvious example of this. Almost everyone who has even heard of Dwarf Fortress has read or heard of this succession fort, even if he hasn't played the game.

But there are plenty of good stories that haven't achieved nearly the same degree of fame, if any fame at all. As of this writing, this board has over two hundred pages full of threads; amongst all of these threads, I'd be willing to bet that there's a hidden gem or two. For this reason, I've decided to make this thread so that people can bring attention to these stories that no-one else is paying attention to.

Unlike with the board's Hall of Legends thread, where there are certain nomination and voting requirements, here the only requirement is that you personally like the story, thread, or game you recommend. It could be something that was well-liked enough to make it into the Hall of Legends, but has faded with popularity over time; it could be an old, forgotten succession fort that you're pretty sure no-one else has any memory of; it could even be a story that was posted to this board and never received a single reply, but you simply thought was well-written. Just about the only thing you can't post is Boatmurdered, because it's simply too famous, but that should be obvious.

So, go ahead! Post a story, community fort, or succession game that you personally think needs more attention and tell us why.

The "what's happening in your fortress/adventure" and the " face palm moments" threads are probably my favourites. Sometimes short anecdotes and stories are just easier than going through pages and pages of text for a fortress. Plus you never know what you are going to get.

"The Life & Times of Reginald Goblinstomper, Elephant at Large" is probably the best I remember. It is currently on a schedule of an update every two years, down to the minute. I also echo Bralbaard about the short story threads being great.

Fort is running at 21 FPS, the ground is having a panic attack in places, and what looks like a conga line of zombified Hungry Heads has formed on (I think) Z-level 32 of the caverns.
I love dwarven status reports.

There's so many stories that'd deserve mentioning. Hard to remember any particular ones without going through the whole board, so I'll just add to threads with short stuff:

"Note to Urist--In which you express your frustration to your dwarves"

Glazedcoast and the Basement of Curiosities are the two stories that got me into Dwarf Fortress.  I don’t hear them mentioned to often, but they were utterly hilarious.

The threads which contain a lot of short anecdotes from normal gameplay probably have a lot of great stories hidden within them, but they're so long that they'd probably take about as long to read through as some of the longer community forts and succession games.

"The Life & Times of Reginald Goblinstomper, Elephant at Large" is probably the best I remember. It is currently on a schedule of an update every two years, down to the minute. I also echo Bralbaard about the short story threads being great.
I really hope he comes back and posts the next part in 2025. I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't.
