Linked stockpile/workshop priority?
« on: August 08, 2024, 05:39:57 am »

What I want to do:
Have stills and kitchens take from various stockpiles, and arranging the layout using minecarts, quantum stockpiles, etc plus using complex work orders to ensure variety in the type of booze and meals produced.

I thought I already had this figured out and written somewhere, but it's been over a year since I last played so I had to do some !!SCIENCE!! again.

What I can't figure out:
Assuming using multiple linked stockpiles, which material will a dorf go to first when starting on a workshop task?

It seems like they'll go to the newest stockpile created even if it's the furthest, but I can't confirm this yet since I only have one active experimental fort atm and material is still scarce for repeated experimentation. But the content of the stockpile in the experiment is also the oldest material (some plump helmets brought at embark). The "older" stockpiles contained plants that were freshly gathered. So maybe they go after the oldest material first? Another variable to take into consideration is that those plump helmets were also the last stuff to be stockpiled (the gathered plants got hauled to their stockpiles earlier), so maybe they're actually practicing last in first out when it comes to picking stuff from stockpiles.

I initially thought that they would grab the nearest item to the workshop, or the nearest item to the dorf when the task got assigned to them, but from observation they consistently went for the plump helmets. When I unlinked the stockpiles containing the plump helmets, they went to the second newest stockpile which is also the second furthest stockpile. However, I didn't take note of the age of the material or when it was stockpiled compared to other materials in other stockpiles other than knowing for sure that it was newer than the plump helmets and was stockpiled earlier. If anyone has done any experimentation/observation on this I would appreciate if you could share your knowledge. I've skimmed through the wiki again of course, but there doesn't seem to be anything written that's relevant to this, unless I looked in the wrong places.

Misc note: I'm playing on the Steam version.

Edit:
With kitchens, it's always the closest material to kitchen first (Nope, I was wrong about this too. There's a pattern, but I just can't figure it out). What gets picked for stills remain a mystery to me as well, as plump helmets from embark always gets picked first no matter what I do. It's the only brewable stuff I can buy from embark, so I can't compare it with other purchasable items from embark. So I took it out of the picture and worked with gatherable plants only and got mixed results; distance doesn't seem to matter but I can't figure out if it's material age or stockpile order or whatever that determines what gets picked first.
