Beginner Emblem - The Seven Warriors

For ages past, the kingdom of Fantasinia was a land in peace. For centuries, the Hawkstein family have ruled the land from their grand capital of Redving. Great power and splendour were theirs, governing over great lords from as far north as Farwood, down to the crossings at Elkbridge and even across the Freemount mountains. But now, they have grown weak and corrupt and slowly but surely, their over-mighty lords no longer obey. Just as it once was when the Hawksteins first took power, the time has come for a new noble family to seize power and the land! And so, Fantasinia slowly slipped into chaos, from which only one family may reign supreme. This was the age of the kingdom at war.

But this is not that story. In the midst of all this chaos, bandits and brigands reign supreme, preying upon villagers and travellers alike, undeterred by any noble lord that once held them in check. One little such village by the name of Crowsvale, nestled under the shadow of the Lionspeak, the tallest of the Freemount mountains, is the star of our story. Now bereft of its nominal protector by the chaos plaguing across the land and having heard word that Red Eye Bandits have made a base nearby, it has taken it upon itself to take its defence into its own hands and set forth a villager into the closest town of Inchester and seek the protection of mercenaries there that could seek to humble themselves in protecting this one small poor insignificant village rather than any greater riches or glory.

This is Beginner FEF because I am new to GMing this rather than for the players. While I would prefer to pick beginners preferentially, I am not going to say no to veterans. And because I am new to GMing, I am explicitly ripping off Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (or the Magnificent Seven for you Westerner fans) for a story. I am not hiding this. I am also be explicitly ripping off Shogun 2's intro speech. I am not hiding this either.

* I am quite likely to borrow these mechanics from Elf because I quite enjoy the way they create boss fights:
** Threat Attacks: Powerful attacks that hit multiple tiles, triggered by attracting the attention of the attacker. Threat Attacks are marked with red squares over the tiles that will be hit and will activate one turn after they are triggered.
** Great Monsters: Monsters that occupy more than one tile, have massive HP counts and have Threat Attacks of their own. They reward large amounts of EXP for defeating them.
** Life Points: Certain enemies will have Life Points, which allow them to be healed completely upon being reduced to 0 HP at the cost of that point. Life Point expenditure cancels all Threat Attacks launched by the wielder that have yet to land.
** Press Turns: Certain bosses will have multiple moves per Phase. Depleting a Life Point destroys all of their Press Turns for that Phase.

Bio:

Evan was born in Oakhelm, a once-thriving village to the west of the Freemount mountains. His wyvern, Razor, has been by his side as long as he could remember. Evan's father received the egg as a reward for saving the life of a traveling merchant, and the wyvern quickly bonded with his young son once it hatched. From an early age, the boy flying on wyvern-back was a common sight for the other villagers.

However, Evan's village no longer exists today. Burned to the ground, its inhabitants were slaughtered by bandits with the exception of Evan himself. He only managed to escape by flying away on Razor's back. However, he had nowhere to go, and continued to fly until he collapsed from hunger. Fortunately, he was found by an old retired mercenary who took pity on him, giving him a place to stay and teaching him how to use a lance as a means of defending himself from the chaos that lurked across the land.

Years after being the sole survivor of the Oakhelm Massacre, Evan works as a mercenary. His work eventually brought him to the town of Inchester, where he quickly gained a reputation for his efficiency as well as his upbeat demeanor. When Evan received word of what was happening to Crowsvale, it vividly reminded him of what happened to his own hometown. Determined to not let something such as this happen again, he eagerly answered the village's defense call. To this day, the screams of his family and the smell of burning still flash in his mind. His kind disposition hides a burning desire for revenge, as he seeks to find the specific man responsible for his family's deaths.

Ervel was born in Redving, the youngest son of the wealthy merchant family, the Gauvains, who hoped to ascend in social status by having one of their children attain a rank of nobility. His parents — Ragnelle and Renaud Gauvain — were overbearing and sought to dictate their children's choices in career and marriage to that end. The family's oldest son — Titus — was expected to inherit the family business, while the younger sons — the middle son Gundisalvus and the youngest son Ervel — were each sent away to be pages of a knight, as the parents hoped they would become knights themselves.

As the page of a knight, Sir Anton of Montealto, he was separated from his family to live in the castle of Anton's liege lord. There, he trained and served dutifully for years, becoming especially skilled at raising horses, riding, and gaining a knack for tactics. When Ervel became a squire, the kingdom was embroiled in chaos. Anton was ordered by his liege to command a lance and fight battles on behalf of the Montealto house. Ervel accompanied Anton through these battles, riding his own horse named Swifthoof. Eventually, they found themselves outnumbered, and rather than risk death at the enemy's hand, Ervel retreated. Anton stubbornly held his ground, and spent his last moments cursing Ervel's cowardice.

Ervel rode teary-eyed away from the battlefield, his hopes of being a knight dashed, and tried to sneak back to Redving for his family. There, he saw the Gauvain's family mansion abandoned. Asking some civilians, he gained a hint of what might have happened. "The Gauvains, huh? Their elder son married a lass from some pitiful third-class noble family. They were later found to have debased the king's coin, had their wealth confiscated, and died on the street during an invasion. I heard two of their kids were squires, but one of them left his knight to die; I guess even the brat's a rotten coward like his parents, huh."

Having learned of his family's disgrace, Ervel realised that he had no way to feed himself except with the tip of a sword and a lance. He was much too young to be doing this work, and deep down, he hated himself, believing himself to be the coward others called him. He travelled far until finding a village where no one had heard of his shameful retreat, and hoped to find peace away from the kingdom's infighting. Alas, when he saw the plight of the villagers in bandit-ridden Freemount, and how they eyed his blade and steed with hope that he'd defend them... he couldn't bring himself to say no.
