Absolutely unbearable lag in dark fortresses
« on: September 19, 2023, 06:40:11 am »

Last I played v 44.05 the lag at the dark fortresses was substantial, but bearable. IT was still very much playable, and you could explore it no problem.

Trying out 47.05, and the lag is inhumane. Less than 1 FPS. Takes 30 seconds to make one step. My computer specs are unchanged. Is there any fix for this? Or maybe my settings are off? What changed in 47.05 to create this monstrosity of a slowdown?

Yeah, this is a problem all big settlements, especially dark fortresses, have. The only fix would be to kill so many goblins that the fps returns to normal levels, but that would require the murder of thousands of goblins, and it would take years. Just avoid them.

If you're so sure that you're gonna end up killing all of dwarven civilization, why not make a statue depicting 2147483647 dead dwarves, all of which are burning? Name it something good, like Deaddead the Dead Dead Dead-Dead of Dying. Just put it in the main hall or something, as a grim reminder that they're all gonna die.

It doesn't help that in addition to the goblins there are thousands of trolls and beakdogs, some of the goblins are constantly demanding other inhabitants identify them selves (many of whom can't even speak to respond), and in any site some inhabitants are constantly pathing to go stand some where else to do nothing.

Theres a lot in hoping Toady can fix the site layout to help reduce these issues before the steam release of adventure-mode, perhaps with some more intuitive structuring, because they'll have to at least re-do all the zone areas where in the past they sort of used developer cheats (like ramp stairways in dwarf forts) for zones which aren't just holes in the wall where goblins run in to collapse into a heap and sleep on the floor.

I don't see that happening since he's said multiple times that he can't touch that code with out breaking it and that's why the map rewrite is needed.

Found out that going onto the dark fortresses at night provides a significant boost to the FPS, probably due to most of the occupants sleeping.

Now it is nice and alive 5(5). Unplayable, but still, leagues better than 1(0). Killed about 100 occupants, it made no difference. Looks like it really has to be 1000+ to speed up.
