The military still causing me problems...
« on: February 14, 2024, 01:49:53 am »

Any suggestions on a good video that explains the details of how the military training/equipment/so on works...because the Steam version does not make any sense to me when it comes to training schedule.  I miss the pre-steam version.  That made sense and I was able to get everything done, from training and equiping and everything else.  The Steam UI makes me not want to do anything with the military.  Or the bare interaction to set one up.  It sucks.  And searching the tutorials on YouTube...I have found many of the YouTubers kind of do the bare mention and skip much of it also.  HELP!  I want a detailed tutorial.  How do I make it so the units only train such and such a month, and only in certain numbers.  I could do that with the old system.  This system feels like it was made by aliens who use logic not of this Earth.  Sorry, but some of the UIs in the game seem to have gone backwards for me.  It lost details and became 'Steamlined'.  I still don't know how to tell archers which type of bolt to use during training vs hunting vs combat.

Or did they remove that completely?   :(

For uniforms and equipment, the only functionality missing is:
- You can't adjust ammo, rations, and drink as before.
- You cannot modify existing uniforms
The rest, including WearOver/Replace and Exact Only, works the same.

...
How do I make it so the units only train such and such a month, and only in certain numbers.  I could do that with the old system.
...
I don't have a video, but you can do that with scheduling still. Scheduling has not changed at all except for the interface. The function of Alerts seem to be shifted into the Burrows screen.

For this example, have at least two squads (squad A and squad B) and one burrow... the example will create a squad with 4 off-duty, 3 defending a burrow, and 3 training, all year.

Step 1, getting to the Schedules screen:
- click 'q' to open Squads screen, then select two squads, then click 'Schedule' button
Now you are looking at a table showing Squads versus Routines. This screen is where you can copy/paste a yearly schedule between squads.

Step 2, adding a new Routine column and a new monthly set of Orders:
- create a new Routine by clicking 'add/edit Routines (columns)' button, click 'add new Routine' button, name it "Routine A", then click 'Done'
- click the '>>' button to scroll right to find the "Routine A" column, then click its 'Edit' button for squad A. The window that opens is where you will create a set of Orders used during one month.
- the default is 10 dwarfs, lower it to 3, so each new order you add is assigned 3 dwarfs.
- there are four buttons at the bottom, click the one for [/\] button and you'll see a "At least 3 Train" Order added, along with a Delete button
- find the burrow defense button, click it, select a burrow, and click the Confirm button. You'll see a "At least 3 Defend burrow" Order added.
- choose if you want dwarfs to wear uniforms while off-duty (not important for this example, but this is where the setting is changed)
- change name to "Orders A" and click 'Done Editing' button.
You will see Squad A has "Orders A" listed in the "Routine A" column, while Squad B still has "No orders" in that column.

Step 3, creating a staggered training schedule (maybe you want extra hauling power in early autumn):
- Use the Copy button to copy Squad A's "Orders A" and Paste it to Squad B. Now they both have the same yearly schedule.
- for Squad A, click the "View Monthly Schedule". You'll see "Routine A" column shows 12 months of "Orders A". Look in the other columns for a "No orders" month and Copy it, then paste it into the "Routine A" column in a few months. 'Escape' back to the main Schedules table and you'll see "monthly orders", indicating Squad A is not following the same orders every month, but Squad B still is.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
