So, a fun thing I just did.

A sweatshirt of mine was tearing at a stitch. At first, I tried to sew it together. It was going slowly, until I messed up and almost tore a different, more important stitch.

Then I realized: "Oh wait, this thing is mostly plastic. I wonder if I could just weld it."
So I took a lighter and tried it.
Sure enough, I could weld it. And it worked better than my sewing.

Aww. I was fully expecting it to end with you firing up your tig welding rig. But I suppose lighter works too.

Oh plastic, if you could have any tool you want and phase your hands in and out of existence, you could probably achieve anything you want. Tho what you did sounds like it would be very rigid..

dumb craszy suggestion: lay two sides of the seam above eachother flat, lay some ferromagnetic wire at the extremeties where the textile goes from two to one layers at the seam, put weight on it, heat wires with induction, remove wires. It would still be rigid, but the fact that its a narrow plane, and not a line, might cause it to move to move in a preferable manner atleast along the axis that's flatter.

That suggestion has the issue that I don't have anything that could reasonably be used for induction heating.

I could probably resistance-heat some wire if I really wanted to, but there really was no need. The way I did it is, I held the two sides of the seam near each other with the lighter flame heating them both to the point of melting. Then I just pressed them to each other. It does bend in the direction it should bend in, and it is at least as strong as the factory-sewn seams on that sweatshirt.

Woaah... Awesome. Really simple principle probably unaffordable machines. Yeah that's what I'm talking about, you could work it in so many ways.


Resisting wires, even simpler! Cheaper to build better heat spread. I was thinking about induction because i got on'a them toys.

Strange to think that there are bits of clothing that have so much plastic in them that you can fix them by melting it together.
