Quality versus Wear?
« on: March 19, 2007, 06:17:00 pm »

I have had a huge amount of trouble deciding whether or not to choose well crafted but heavily worn items, or should i choose the brand new medioce clothes?

Is there a scale that shows how much more better quality protects more, or how much wear affects protection?

The wiki has a page here: http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Item_Quality
that shows item worth decreasing with wear. I would assume that item effectiveness drops by the same multipliers.

If that is the case, which it may very well be, then here's a breakdown:

code:
 legend: - well crafted      x1.2
        + finely-crafted    x1.4
        * superior quality  x1.6
        = exceptional       x1.8
        @ masterful         x2
        x some wear         x.75
        X heavy wear        x.5
        XX tatters          x.25

Effective modifier:
quality/wear  normal  x     X     XX
normal        1.0     0.75  0.5   0.25
-             1.2     0.9   0.6   0.3
+             1.4     1.05  0.7   0.35
*             1.6     1.2   0.8   0.4
=             1.8     1.35  0.9   0.45
@             2       1.5   1     0.5

Looking at the chart, Masterfully made tatters aren't an intelligent choice.  But masterfully done heavily worn items are as good as normal items with no wear.  Light wear on Masterfully made items is still better than some too.
