Pause and Mute

I think it'd be convenient if the pause-key also paused the music.  You know how sometimes, you'll be playing with your fort and suddenly, the phone rings, or something?  In fact, I can't really think of many cases where someone would need to pause the game but not also need to turn the sound down.

I would estimate about half of the spent playing is with the game paused.

I use an external playlist personally as after a few hundred hours the music starts to get a tad bit repetitive so this suggestion wouldn't help me anyway.

That said, I'd be against it simply because of what Sizik pointed out. I spend a lot of time paused in this game to plan digging designations or look for that one dwarf who just got a mood or whatever else.

Yeah, in df you have to pause the game to access virtually every menu except fo military . It would be really jarring to have the music stop every time you do anything as a player.

Batgirl, maybe what you're looking for is the addition of a more "formal" pause mode where everything freezes and the music stops...

I wouldn't see a problem with stopping the music in the Esc menu (except for the volume control screen, of course).

Yeah, I forgot about all the in-game pauses; I was thinking more in terms of "pausing because something in real life is demanding my attention".  An official "pausing because I have to stop playing for a bit" mode, that mutes the music and everything, would be good.

I'm in favor of a separate mute key.  It must be accessible in worldgen, though.  During especially long ones, I usually watch a movie or three (the LotR extended editions are about the right total length), but I can't do that if I forgot to mute it before I started.

Depending on your os, you might be able to press the little speaker in the bottom right corner, go to sound mixing or whatever it's called and select individual programs' audio level. You can mute specific programs.

I was looking to see if anyone had suggested a mute button/key for DF.  I agree that there should be a separate mute/unmute button/key.  I disagree, however, with those who say that you should go into a separate Sound mixer (or even the DF settings screen) to mute the sound coming from DF.

The reason for this is twofold:

First, switching to a separate sound mixer program (or even the DF settings screen) and muting the audio requires significantly more mouse movements / button presses / keystrokes than a simple button that can be pressed (and/or a key that can be pressed) to mute/unmute the audio.

Second, if using a separate mixer program (or even the DF settings screen), it can be very hard to ensure that the audio levels are the same as they were before they were muted when unmuting the audio.  A mute/unmute button/key, on the other hand, would remember what the audio levels were before they were muted and restore them to those values when they were unmuted.

Tldr:  click (or press) mute/unmute once: sound goes away.  Click (or press) it again:  sound comes back at same volume as before.
