I think the solution to this problem is a 'survey' key.  It will tell you about any prominent landmarks in your local vicinity.  Example:

<You>
"You see a large mountain to the west."
"You see a river far to the east."
"You see a cave nearby to the northwest".
"You see an Alligator to the south".
etc...

Damn. I read that and got all excited (Wow they have survey! Go Toady!) since playing MUDs as I used to, I used surveying a lot. Then I re-read your post and got sad since it was a suggestion.

Reminds me of the old games "Lion" and "Wolf". You could hold down a key to use a sense, and icons would appear at the four corners and four sides of your screen showing the most prominent thing in that direction.

Just reading it makes me want to play a MUD. I never played them all that much, but surveying is amazingly nostalgic.

I've tried both and neither seem to work.

actually I think you need to interact with your waterskin (shift+i) next to a water source. But I could be wrong.

It took me about twenty or thirty minutes to find the cave and I even knew about the 9x9 area highlight in the quest log. I think I just got unlucky.

That survey idea strikes me as pretty good in any case.

We'd just like to note that once you DO come across the cave, it's VERY hard to miss.

Just found a fun hidden command that makes it a LOT easier!

-Arrive at the site on the travel map
-Zoom down
-press "Q"
-press "m"
-press "z"

That gives you a local map location.  Sweet!  Why didn't I find this before?

Or just press 'Q' then 'z'. Just circle the outer part of the blueish area, then spiral inwards. If it is night, it will be faster to go back into 'T'ravel mode and walk a few tiles until dawn breaks for a much bigger line of sight.

edit: Oh and by the way... How was this a hidden command? It's listed on the right of the screen after pressing 'Q'..

The problem is with caves that aren't part of a quest, but just random places you want to explore.  We need to be able to open a local map for any area we happen to be in, not just quest locations.

Today when I was playing adventure mod I was halfway through clearing a cave looking for a minotaur. Cause a lot of my peeps got injured I decided to (T)ravel and come back cause decent fighters seem to be rare.

Anyhow when I pressed T and chose to move back so the same spot without moving >. A menu came up.

Don't Travel
Creature

Chose creature and it took me straight to the minotaur.

---------
However I tried to do it without exploring and with some exploring on a different one and it would not let me again.
