Foreign performances and instruments
« on: April 14, 2023, 04:58:04 pm »

So I had a human Bard visit my fort, and while he was there he put together a jam session with two of my dwarves. Cool, and the dwarves now know this musical form. I’d love to have them doing the thing more, even after the Bard has left… But, the musical form he taught these dwarves uses two instruments that I don’t have and (I think because they are from a human civ?) I can’t make at any of the workshops that I have. Is there any way for me go get access to these instruments or will I be stuck with them just ‘simulating’ the instruments?

At the moment, I don’t get caravans from the human civ… can I go demand tribute from them and create a caravan that I can eventually ask for the instruments, or is there some other way for me to get the knowledge of making them?

(In a side question, are there any DFHack tools to look at artistic forms? I didn’t see any….)

It might be quicker to start a war and raid their settlements for instruments, but from what I've seen, instruments are usually part of the typical trade caravan even when not asked for.  Also, there is no way for the dwarves to learn how to make things they can't already make.  You might be able to allow that with modifying some of the raw files, but that would only work for subsequently created worlds and not this one you're in.

You could also potentially entice visiting human bards with open taverns, and then steal their instruments.

Not really many good ways to go about it though unfortunately.

Establish trade via one-time tribute demand.

Trade for a few years and you should be able to accumulate a handful of their instruments. You'll also start to get visitors. Many bards come with an instrument. They'll drop it if you grant them residency and remove their location labor setting. The dropped instrument will be added to your fort's stocks.

Eventually, you should have a whole slew of foreign instruments, but it's hard to acquire every variety of each civ's instruments.
