Yeah, I was about to make an edit to that effect after giving it some thought. At least now we know that the soil quality mechanic isn't that complex and what the difference actually is.

Now the question becomes whether or not surface crops get bonuses from cavern soil, because if they do then that could be a major game changer.

By the way, there was a slight anomaly in my data that I'm trying to figure out. A total of 100 seeds were planted in each plot over the course of the test period. The non-cavern soil produced 100 stacks of crops, but the first irrigated stone plot produced slightly more than 100 stacks. I haven't examined the other plots as closely yet, but is there some existing mechanic that could explain more stacks than seeds? Could a barrel have been at capacity and a stack was split? I'm thinking of re-running the test with stockpiles set to no barrels for each test crop just to examine this.

If you planted plump helmets, maybe the dwarves ate some and re-planted the seeds?

Supposedly the modded plump helmets chipathingy provided to me were made inedible, uncookable, and unbrewable. Here's the mod folder he sent me.
