While pretty insignificant to the previous few posts, the hurricane did put some complications for my vacation plans in a few weeks - my brother is getting married and me and my mom are flying down there for it. Except the bungalow that my brother rented for us was badly damaged, if not totally destroyed.

Still reeling from Helene, Florida must now brace for Tropical Storm Milton!



Expected to make landfall Wednesday afternoon, the great majority of Florida is in the wet-zone this time.

At least 53 people lost their lives. More deaths are feared when the rubble is cleared.

The Toll has climbed to 90 today, with many areas still too wet for recovery teams to explore.

With the death toll nearing 230, Helene is now easily the deadliest US Hurricane since Katrina.

And Milton has now hit cat 5. Think the hope is that it weakens a bit before landfall, but, uh. Anyone in the way, probably time to get the hell out of dodge.

Tampa's mayor Jane Castor has said that "Helene was just a warning, this is the real one. Without being overly dramatic I can say: If you choose to stay in one of the evacuation zones, you will die". Already a cat 5, meteorologists say that it will only gain more in strenght before making landfall.

The US military is worried as well that Central Command will be hit by it, and is taking appropriate measures to retain command structure for the Middle East.

So... the less bad news is it seems to have weakened somewhat; winds seem to be below cat 4, storm surge in the primary impact zone (basically tampa) nudged down from 10-15 to 10-12 (i.e. it's less likely their primary hospital gets literally washed away). Conditions for the tampa area look like they're going to be better than they could have been, basically.

... the still pretty terrible news? They still seem to be expecting 10-12 ft surges in the bay in a few hours, regardless of where the eye actually makes landfall. Even if it avoids the worst case scenario and doesn't go straight into the bay, a great deal of tampa and the surrounding area is likely about to disappear
