What's the problem with my defensive setup?
« on: January 23, 2023, 03:07:09 am »

I've made up this underground rampart maze.

Dwarves behind fortifications won't shoot.
Why?

Should have inserted the image directly, as I doubt many people will click on a .ru adress nowadays.
So as a guess you might try to check if your dwarves have bolts, and if so the line of sights.
Do they jump in melee on the goblins or are just watching?

If they don't have enough skill (to be called elite crossbowmen,) your dwarves can't shoot through non-adjacent fortifications. Can they attack targets near the lowered drawbridges?

It's the skill level problem perhaps. I rarely get above ground sieges nowadays so I've had only 1 test. Dwarves didn't shoot at all.

Yep. Make a smaller space for them to stand in. Non-elite Dorfs adjacent to fortifications can fire through them OK.

Yeah, I have a burrow right next to the rampart. All this maze thing cost me helluva time and resources and lives but is kinda meh. The undead siege I'm hosting at the moment simply ignores it and camps on the surface.
Well, live and learn.

This is a skill issue as said previously. In this setup dwarves who are adjacent to the fortification will shoot through it, but not through the second, third, and fourth one. Dwarves not adjacent won't shoot at all. Training can take a lot, so you need to reconfigure the setup, unfortunately.

Alternatively you could try a direct order (to kill) - I have some setups where dwarves won't fire unless directed, which is different from pre-Steam versions (in the same setup). But a reconstruction is a better bet.

I think you can replace the fortifications with statues and they'll shoot through them at any skill level. Building destroyers are a problem, obviously.

A gap too wide to jump could also work. (3 tiles? I don't remember how far you can jump from a sprint.) They'd probably just climb into the trench and avoid your archers, though, even if you used elevated statues in the middle to stop them from taking the shortest path.
