So I managed to wipe all the pits from the goblin civilization near me but I cannot manage to defeat the main fortress.
I have 1 squad of legendary miners and 2 of legendary marksdwarfs all clad in 100% masterful steel with masterful steel weapons too.

Even so they are unable to fight the vomit demon that reigns in the goblin fortress, they loose 2 or 3 members of each squad and are defeated every time I try.
I'm in steam version so the only war animal I have available are dogs and they're really weak so I hesitate to assign any to my military for fear of depression when they all die.
Is there a weapon that's more effective ? should I use candy ? Or do I just need to send more squads at once ? Or any other tactic I could use ?

I've seen advice before that suggests using the largest warbeasts you possibly can. The demon rulers of goblin civs are very large and this is an important factor in off site combat and worldgen combat. Giant war animals were suggested in the advice. If that is unobtainable, cave crocodiles are pretty large and lay clutches of eggs. You'd want a warbeast that multiplies rapidly and also matures to adulthood quickly while also being as large as possible.

Careful with that though. I've once lost a fort to a single clutch of cave croc eggs.
Somewhere about 200 cave croc hatchlings dropped my FPS to unplayable levels once they hatched.

Probably less impacting nowadays, with us all having better computers than back in the days, but be careful with huge litters.

yes I've seen this advice too only without mods is it even possible to train any kind of beast for war in steam version?
As far as I've seen the only animals I can war train at all are dogs, doesn't seem very useful.

Not that I have any issue with using mods but seeing that my fortress is already 11 years old it's too late as the mods need to be added before world generation as far as I know.

All trainable animals seem to work in vanilla Steam version. I have war lions for example.

The wiki has a list of animals trainable for war https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Animal_trainer idk if it has been changes, but there's that.

So you could do raid missions to elven sites to get big animals. Or alternatively send a "reguest tribute" mission to each Elven civ - then they'll start sending caravans so you could get the animals without getting wars with Elves.

I once saw a demon that got killed by a donkey in world gen, so I guess from that list gorilla and upwards in size has a shot at killing the demon.

You should be able to tweak things post-worldgen if you edit the raws in that world's save folder. Tl;dr base game raws generate world-specific raws during worldgen. You can tweak either and/or both to mod stuff in your game. One works for specific forts you want to change right now, the other works for making all future worlds DF generates more suited to your tastes.

In this case I would recommend adding the [TRAINABLE_WAR] tag to one of the large, dangerous animals you happen to have a lot of (I'm guessing you could find elves with tamed Giant Jaguars or the like, although those should already be trainable as war animals). Creature raws may be located in different files of your world folder, but you should can ctrl-f to sort through them fairly efficiently. Something like region1 > saves > data > objects > raws > one of the creatures files. Don't quote me on this, but I believe the giant versions of animals are actually a template applied to the base version, so you would want to add the token to regular turtles or w/e, in order to have giant war turtles.

Not in v50+, the raws are no longer copied into the save folder. Instead, the mods used to create the world -- including the vanilla files -- are loaded for each save.

Here's a link to the table, be sure to read what the notes mean at the end of the table, especially ≈.

Thank you all this has been very useful, I'll try and get some of the animals that can be trained for war.

It seems that outside of resurrecting the elven civ that had a ... hum...unfortunate accident ... my best bet would be to get jabberer's in the caves.
I'll give this a try and see how it goes.

I've also just found candy so hopefully this will help a bit.

So does this mean that all I would have to do in my world to say create a new item, like for example a duplicate cloak that would be considered armor and not clothing, would be to modify the raws and next time I load my save those modified raws would be injected and the new cloak armor would be available to craft ?

Yikes, idk how I feel about that. Why though??
