it would be nice if the clothing workshop wouldnt have 3 whole sets of work orders for "yarn, cloth, silk", but instead if works similar to how stone works:

if i set "make rock table" i dont care what rock material is used... and if i want a specific material i set it with the order.
if i set "make trousers" i dont care what material the trousers are made out of. if i want specific silk trousers i set it in the work order material.

maybe other workshops could also use such a QOL edit? (forges maybe? "make swords"... if you want specific iron swords you then set material in the work order)
and stuff like the "liasion diplomacy" screen could also use such a thing... "bring me any leather next year" for example... and not highlighting every type of leather avaiable.

+1 a good, sensible idea.  The more Toady One makes similar systems act similar to each other, the easier it’ll be for new players to become familiar with the game.

Thats a good idea. Consistency between menus is very important

While I generally agree this is a good idea, it helps the manager screen that you can write what you want and quickly get a work order for that. Especially if this suggestion is to extend to all metal items as well - writing "iron sword" is both quicker and smoother than writing "sword" and then clicking on the "details" magnifying glass icon, and selecting iron as the material from a list. Losing that would be a bigger QoL loss than what is added by unifying the systems.

Re-adding a keyboard shortcut for the "details" might speed it up, but what would really be great is if it could auto-create text prompts from the available/possible details. So you could search for both "sword" and "iron sword", with the latter being a shorthand for the former with the iron material auto-filled as the detail. Or search for "mudstone brick", "cave blob leather cape" etc. and get those work orders up quickly without having to go into the "details" menu.

This is a good idea but I would suggest also implementing the reverse. Have a generic "make item out of material" command that automatically uses whatever material is available. But also have a detailed menu that lets you specify everything down to a T. Sometimes for fun roleplaying reasons I might want to make a specific item like a red spidersilk cloak decorated with blue cloth images. It is possible to do stuff like that by manipulating stockpiles, but it would be much easier to have that function built into workshops to begin with.
