Steam: How can I get rid of these bodies?
« on: December 19, 2022, 08:18:23 pm »

I got invaded, and as a result there's some body parts and corpses strewn around the entrance of my fortress (screenshot here). I cannot for the life of me figure out how to tell my dwarves to get rid of the this stuff, and now I'm getting miasma'd like crazy.

I unlocked (un-forbade?) the items en masse, marked them as garbage using the bulk garbage tool, I tried designating a corpse stockpile, multiple garbage zones, and even a tomb (since some of the invaders were undead dwarves), but my workers still leave the bodies where they've fallen. Am I missing something?

I like to designate a refuse/corpse stockpile near a dump and then move things into the dump. For some reason, dumping garbage is typically a dwarf's last priority in choosing jobs. Do you have idle workers?

I think so, I have a few dwarves at a time labeled as "no job", including a designated hauler. And there should be more than a dozen tasks for getting rid of bones/teeth/bodies, but they don't show up in the tasks list

If they are from your own population you should build a tomb with a coffin in it so they can be buried. If they're goblins or elves, just throw them in the garbage pit...preferably one that has a pool of magma below so you can dispose of them properly.

I think the body parts are from one of the dwarves that attacked me.

How do I get my dwarves to take the body to the garbage zone? Does it actually have to be built over a pit? The zone tool's description makes it sound like the garbage zones I've placed on the floor should still work.

edit: and if the garbage zone has to be a pit, am I supposed to mark the zone over the empty space, or on the floor at the bottom?

Mark them for dumping. Garbage can icon, center toolbar on the bottom, right most button on that toolbar.

No, BUT, if they dump something into magma and it's big, like a troll corpse, there will be a splash and magma mist will form which is always !!FUN!!

They do, but you'll have to wait for them to decompose completely.

If the garbage zone is on the side of a pit, they will throw it off the edge and down into whatever is below. If it's magma and you're throwing a corpse down there, it will burn up pretty quickly and then you don't have to look at it anymore.
