Loincloth / thong challenge!
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:17:00 pm »

Yesterday I was playing adventure mode, and decided that I wanted my adventurer to be an armor-less half-nekkid barbarian type.  So I took off all upper body clothing and armor except for helmet, gauntlets and boots.

How far do you all think you can get with a character who does not wear body armor?  I propose a challenge mode:  your character can wear only footwear, helmet, gauntlets, boots, and either a thong/loincloth.  I guess female characters can wear some cloth or the like up top, for the sake of decency (optional).

It looks like characters will soon have to wear warm clothing to survive in some colder climes, once the next version or two comes out, so you'd better give it a try while it is still feasible!

I'll post the legends/char files of my chars if I manage to get some to become successful.

(sorry, if you hack in an elephant PC species, that does not count... well, OK)

Given the fact that you pretty much never take a hit once you reach Legend for shield user, I think it would be very doable.

That said, I think using anything other than the largest two-handed weapons is against the spirit of this competition. I wiil have to try!

A tale about my attempt at this, in the form of a short story!

Character: Pesor Slaughtersknight
Gender: Female
Skills Proficient Wrestler, Adepts Swordsman.

Went around the shops and sold off extra stuff, and bought a shiny new two handed sword.

Inventory now thus:
===========
Wearing:
Elephant leather loincloth, chimpanzee leather cap, cougar leather gloves, and rope reed sandals.
Wielding: A finely crafted bronze two-handed sword. It is adorned with hanging rings of superior quality mule leather, and has images of exceptionally designed humans in leopard leather.

Am also carrying several gold pieces, a silver piece, a water bottle, with water, some meat, and of course the backpack.

You will notice, no bra!
==========================

Set out from the town of Xemuja with the help of four drunks from the local tavern, they probably joined because of the lack of a bra. Mind, no idea if they were men or women, as you can't tell in Adventure mode. The mayor had requested we kill an ettin.
We travelled to the cave known as 'Clobberscars the Creepy Omen', upon Zursloronken Ngog 'The Elder Wealthy Plain of Fathers', arriving with the sun low in the eastern sky. The Waning crescent moon accompanied it there, and the weather was only chilly if you weren't wearing anything. Brr!

We entered the cave, and despite my instructions, the drunks immediately disappeared into the darkness where their distant shouts informed me they'd come upon a mudman. I got there as quickly as I could, but it was too late, the mudman was already dead.

A second mudman joined the fray at this point, with a lizardman by his side. We went to it, and I cut off the right lower arm of the lizardman, followed swiftly by his right lower leg.
The lizardman collapsed in agony, but that didn't stop us from finishing the deed, as I removed the rest of the left arm, and then sheathed my sword in it's chest. The sheer force of this blow sent it sailing off my blade, several paces away, bleeding out.
Turning my attention to the mudman, who was grappling with a drunk next to me, I immediately removed it's left hand and left leg in one impressive slice of the blade, sending it toppling. I followed this by removing it's other leg, and it's head.

Another mudman appeared as we progressed, and I made short work of him. A snakeman leapt out from hiding at me, but one of the drunks charged him and knocked him over next to me. I swung my blade and slashed his face. The group of us continued our assault on the stricken lizardman, and it finally drew its last breath.

After only one more mudman, we found the ettin. He saw us immediately, and didn't mince words.
He declared he was 'Astesh Negateromances' and that we should 'prepare to die'.
I thought that it was he that should be doing the preparing.

I then began the execution of our ettin slaying plan. I stood back a bit and let the drunks show their bravery. As soon as the Ettin had been distracted, I leapt in, sword swinging, cutting his knee. To my horror, I tripped, and collided with him. We fell over in a tangled mess. I stood up immediately, standing on the ettin himself, cutting his knee with my next strike, while the drunks stood all around, beating it with their fists.

My next strike removed the entire right leg. The pain must have been unbearable, and the ettin passed out. Everything was going according to plan! My next strikes led to the removal of the left leg as well. By this point, the ettin was obviously bleeding heavily. My mission was now to put it out of its misery. With as much force as I could muster, I cut him in twain, killing him immediately. I declared to my fellows that henceforth this sword would be known as Astesh's Bane, to many cheers.

We returned back to the town for drinking.

When I told the mayor the news, he was extremely pleased. Then I made the mistake of asking if there's anything else I could do. He informed me there was an undead pikemaster named Nelti Duskpocket to the southeast. I sighed, and agreed to look into it. I mean, I'd just killed an ettin with hardly any trouble at all, what could the hordes of ravenous undead do?

We set off again, arriving the following night. The stars were out. Immediately we were beseiged by the hordes of ravenous undead. Swinging my sword, we carved our path before us as we searched the ruins for our prey.

As we searched the second of the ruins, we reached the second level down, I was surprised to be charged by a skeleton of no particular nature. It slipped past my defences, striking me in the upper body, breaking my upper spine, and then collided with me. In shock, and without choice, I dropped my sword, and fell to the ground. I crawled away. I could feel death grabbing at me in this place. It was hard to breathe.

The drunks defending me as best they could, held the undead off, destroying the skeleton that had hit me so hard, and fighting another two undead creatures.

Crawling was all I could do, my lungs filling with my own liquids. With the sounds of battle in my ears I died, nearly naked and alone in the dark, drowned in my own fluids.

But maybe, just maybe, in this place, I would rise again!

Post battle summary:
Me and two drunks dead, the two-handed sword lost somewhere in the depths of the ruins of Alatlesno.

Nice job!

I've had a few noteworthy successes so far... most recently a mace-wielding brute in a whale-leather thong almost cleaned out an entire goblin fortress... but sadly he died.

I am not sure what happened, but I think he dodged out of the way of a charging child and ended up getting slashed from behind by a goblin swordsman.  I can't figure out how that little bastard could have done him in, since my man was whacking everything else down like field mice.  I guess it could have just gotten lucky.

I wish I had taken better notes about some of my PCs.  By the way, is there an easy way to export info about a character?  Is there an easy way to export the legend file for a PC?

Let me know if you have any more good runs.

goblins is impressive, given the strength of arrows. I take it much hiding was done.

Had another run at it.

This time I took a really nice axe.

I managed to kill:
2 zombie pikemasters,
1 zombie swordmaster,
Lots of undead and animals,
1 Four armed giant,
a bunch of kobolds.

I died when I got shot in the head by a kobold bowman, but that wasn't what killed me. In fact, I would have survived that had the rest of me not been so injured that I couldn't walk out of there.
I kept passing out, and eventually a kobold spearman found me.

Every single one of my games ends with me reaching legendary in a bunch of things, getting bored, and wiping out the humans.

Did you scum to reach that level?

On the loincloth challenge itself, I feel that even gauntlets are pushing it. If you wanted to go truly barbaric, you would wear the loincloth and nothing else. I suppose some sandals, and maaaaybe a helmet, but that's kinda iffy.

I dunno. I might give it a go at some point.

I've had some good runs.    Recently I was doing really well when unfortunately I experimented with the new "ignite" feature and scalded my character to death.  Toady really needs to tone down the steam business a bit...  of course, fire and all that it in the early stages, so I'm not complaining!

*sniff*

Like most of you, the way I operate is to sell off all the extra armor, etc. and trade it for the nicest weapon available.  That's what Conan would do, dammit! Then usually I go to a ruins first and practice my wrestling skills until high up (for real, if zombies were real in RL, they would be perfect for practicing wrestling... as long as you could keep them from biting).  Then I start fighting exclusively with the weapon (set attack pref to "strike").

More often than not I plow through everything in my path until I get shot by someone, or I just get unlucky.

By the way, can anyone recommend  a good way to display character/legend info?  Do i just need to print to bitmap and post it?

Maybe I will make a request that chars who wear no armor/shields should have a note of it made in their legend info.

A flaming loincloth challenge would be the next step up in difficulty.

You'd need to have a whole lot of em, though.

You'd have an infinite supply of bugs to wield, at least.

Well,

My thong-clad sword specialist just took out a hydra without getting touched.  It charged her, she dodged, and started wailing on it from behind, stunning it and eventually hacking at least one or two heads off.

I have to say that this experiment of mine has shown that this game has a simple yet elegant and fun combat system.  Playing a lightly armored char has been fun... just out of curiosity, can a high level in armor wearing completely cancel out armor penalties, or will you always be a little faster without armor on?

By the way, I usually play with combat settings on strike only, and have defense for charges and other attacks set to dodge out of the way.  It it fun to watch the char jump around and send limbs flying.

Still, I think I've tapped most of the potential for fun in adventurer mode.  I think I will leave DF alone for a while until development has moved along.
