Flashing cross confuses me

there is a flashing white cross a couple of places in my fortress. A specific dwarf seems very interested in it, and sticks around it or on it for long periods of time.

It doesnt yield anything in Q or K.

it looks like a plus, but "all the way" up and down to the border of the letter. +

That's a smoothing designation after a dwarf has picked up the task but before they've actually walked over and completed it. The dwarf sticking by there is probably smoothing the floor.

ok thanks--- it looked like he was carrying around a shield.

Smoothing i designated hours ago, and now they get to it.
